The Ribeira Sacra, located between the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, is a destination that combines spectacular landscapes, millenary history and a unique wine-producing tradition. Its name, which means ‘sacred riverbank’, refers to the numerous monasteries that settled on its banks during the Middle Ages, and which today are harmoniously integrated into a natural environment of great beauty.
Heroic viticulture on thousand-year-old terraces
One of the most unique aspects of the Ribeira Sacra is its heroic viticulture. The vineyards are cultivated on steep slopes that descend towards the rivers Sil and Miño, with slopes that in some cases exceed 70%. To adapt to this terrain, terraces or ‘socalcos’ have been built to allow the vines to grow in these extreme conditions. This type of viticulture requires a great deal of manual effort, as mechanisation is practically impossible.
The most important grape varieties in the region are Mencía for reds and Godello for whites, although others such as Brancellao, Merenzao, Loureira, Treixadura, Dona Branca, Albariño and Torrontés are also grown. The wines of the Ribeira Sacra are characterised by their freshness, minerality and an authentic expression of the Galician terroir.

Unique wine tourism experiences
The Ribeira Sacra Wine Route offers visitors a wide range of activities to immerse themselves in the world of wine and local culture. Visits to wineries allow visitors to get a close-up look at the winemaking process, from the cultivation of the vines to the final tasting. Some wineries offer unique experiences, such as blind tastings, where the visitor’s sensory capacity is put to the test, or wine tourism activities adapted for families.
There are also wine routes that combine wine with other activities, such as catamaran rides through the Sil canyons, Segway routes through the most emblematic viewpoints or kayak excursions on the Miño river. These experiences allow you to enjoy the unique landscapes of the Ribeira Sacra from different perspectives.

Cultural and natural heritage
The Ribeira Sacra is also a place of great cultural wealth. The Romanesque monasteries, such as Santo Estevo de Ribas de Sil or San Pedro de Rocas, bear witness to the region’s monastic past and blend perfectly into the landscape. The Wine Centre in Monforte de Lemos offers a complete overview of the history and wine culture of the area.
The viewpoints, such as Cabezoás, offer breathtaking views of the canyons and terraced vineyards. The Ribeira Sacra was declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2022 and is a Unesco World Heritage candidate, reflecting its natural and cultural value.

Gastronomy and accommodation
Local gastronomy is another of the Ribeira Sacra’s attractions. Local products, such as octopus “á feira”, artisan cheeses and Galician empanadas (pies), go perfectly with the region’s wines.
The Ribeira Sacra is a destination that offers experiences for all tastes: from wine and gastronomy lovers to those passionate about nature, history and culture. Its combination of spectacular landscapes, cultural heritage and winemaking tradition make it a unique place to enjoy an unforgettable getaway.
