Holy Week in Viveiro: tradition, devotion and Galician charm

Easter Week in Viveiro, in the province of Lugo, is one of the oldest and most important religious celebrations in Galicia, with an uninterrupted tradition since the 13th century. This festivity commemorates the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ through various processions and liturgical acts organized by the local brotherhoods. Its cultural and touristic relevance has been recognized with the declaration of Fiesta of International Tourist Interest in 2013.

Easter Week in Viveiro is characterized by its sobriety and austerity, reflecting a deep devotion that makes it more similar to the Castilian celebrations than to the Andalusian ones. The processions, which extend from Friday of Sorrows to Easter Sunday, have the participation of eight brotherhoods and brotherhoods that coordinate the various events and parades.

Among the most outstanding processions are:

Procession of the Last Supper: the Passage of the Supper was created in 1808 by an artisan who took sailors from the neighboring port of San Cibrao as models for the figures of the Apostles.

Procession of the Prendimiento: organized by the Brotherhood of the Prendimiento, very striking for its red and white tunics and hoods.

Procession of the Encounter: another exciting ceremony in which participate, along with the falling Christ, the carvings of the Dolorosa, San Juan and Veronica, and which is followed by the crowd from the balconies.

Procession of the Holy Burial: the most luxurious of all, with the bearers dressed in black talar clothes with long tails and a large hood with a mask.

Procession of the Passion: takes place at midnight on Good Friday. Several brotherhoods and sisterhoods participate with their respective floats, among them the Siete Palabras and the Women of the Holy Cross, dressed in their classic mantilla.

In addition to the cultural and spiritual richness offered by Holy Week, Viveiro and its surroundings offer multiple options for tourism and the enjoyment of nature:

Historic center of Viveiro: Strolling through the streets of Viveiro is to enter centuries of history. Highlights include the Gate of Charles V, a vestige of the old medieval wall, and the church of Santa Maria del Campo, dating from the twelfth century. The traditional Galician architecture is reflected in its squares and narrow streets, offering visitors a unique experience.

Covas Beach: A short distance from the center of Viveiro is this long beach of fine sand, ideal for relaxing and enjoying the Cantabrian Sea. Its calm waters make it a perfect place for families and water sports lovers.
