Routes to do this autumn in Pontevedra

We have a wide range of excursions to do in the Pontevedra autumn. In addition to entering the typical forest landscape, dyed in the colors of the season, picking mushrooms and chestnuts, it is an opportune time to contemplate good views of the Atlantic. And all this, with a fairly friendly climate.

From Cabana to Cabacina. There are clear autumn days that are ideal for going up the mountain to get fresh air. This is one of the routes of Mount Aloia, circular, 19.2 km long, which begins in As Pozas da Cabana. We go up until we reach the natural viewpoint of Cabacina, with a panoramic view that extends over the Miño valley, Tui and Valença. Along the way we may find a few free cows. We also pass through the Senda de As Udencias, and through a recreational area, until returning to As Pozas.

Mount Xesteiras. This 716 m mountain, between the municipalities of Cuntis and Valga, dominates the counties of Ulla-Umia and Tabeirós. We access the ascent from the village of Magán and go down to Requián, on a route of about 14 km. One of the obligatory stops is the Sobreiral de Magán, in Cuntis, an arboreal formation cataloged as singular. There are also cork oaks in the atrium of the chapel of As Miragres de Requián, in A Estrada. And, what views do we have from the top of the mountain? Well, our gaze covers the Arousa estuary, Santiago de Compostela, Padrón, Pontecesures, A Estrada and even the Meirama thermal power plant.

Fraga de Catasós. If we feel like collecting chestnuts, we can walk along this circular route between centennial chestnut and oak trees. It is located on the outskirts of Lalín, and it is a small but intense forest, with very vertical trees, defending its space from light. So much so, that the chestnut trees were considered the largest in Europe. By the way, which writer walked around here a lot?… A clue? There are her initials: E. P. B.

O Toxa Waterfall. It is in Pazos, in the municipality of Silleda. This waterfall is produced by the Toxa river, and has a fall of 30 m. In autumn, the tint of the landscape is especially moving, full of oaks, chestnut trees, cork oaks… In the upper part of the valley there is a viewpoint and, from there, a track that reaches the point where the waterfall falls. Nearby there is a recreation area. On the way, we have to take the opportunity to approach the Romanesque monastery of Carboeiro and the Ponte do Demo, which are a few kilometers away.

Route of the mills of Folón and Picón. This is a small circular route, 3.5 km long, in the municipality of O Rosal, between Martín and Fornelos. The thing is to ascend a slope of Mount Campo do Couto, where the mills of the Picón River are, and descend by another slope, where those of the Folón are. It can be said that it is a single ladder arrangement of mills. They are from the 17th and 18th centuries, and have been restored. The visit is of ethnographic and landscape interest, and good to do in autumn, when the sun does not heat up so much. From above we have views of the mouth of the Miño, O Val do Rosal, Mount Santa Trega and Portugal.

The route of Stone and Water. It is a 6.5 km linear route that runs along the banks of the Armenteira, in the municipalities of Meis and Ribadumia, in the region of O Salnés. It is very well equipped (signs, services, picnic areas, bars…). It begins at the Armenteira monastery, of which only the cloister can be visited. The road is full of more or less restored mills. In the Armenteira area there are many waterfalls. In the group of Serén mills, the recreation of a peasant village stands out; Later, we arrive at the Barrantes mills. The route ends in a bar to regain strength and turn around.

Fraga do Barragán Route. It is a circular route between the municipalities of Fornelos de Montes and Pazos de Borbén, near the As Eiras reservoir. It covers 17.3 km, but it has many exits, so you can do small sections. It follows the course of the Barragán river, in an environment full of vegetation and, if we look carefully, many archaeological remains. The most remarkable thing is the passage through the Monte da Cidade, with an Iron Age castro (fort). It also passes through A Ponte dos Mouros.

Pereiro Waterfalls. It is a very short route that goes along the banks of the Pereiro stream, in Poio. It starts at A Ponte Vella and runs through a riverside forest with several wooden walkways and abandoned mills. Two waterfalls appear on the walk: A Pindilleira, with a drop of almost 7 m, and Freixa Alta, at the end of the path, with a drop of 10 m.

Os Carranos Route. This route follows the course of the Tea river, from the old rectory of Fofe to the river beach of Maceiras, in Covelo. The most picturesque comes when we find the old sawmill, with a large hydraulic saw from the beginning of the 20th century, with its interpretation center. The journey ends at Maceiras beach. In autumn we will not take a bath, but we can take out some watercolors and paint the landscape.

From bridge to bridge in Soutomaior. We begin the route at the Comboa medieval bridge, passing by the river beach and the recreational area. After a walk among the trees, following the current of the Verdugo River, we arrive at the suspension bridge over A Poza das Bestas, near the mouth of the Oitavén, with another river beach.
