3-day itinerary through the south of Ourense: Heritage, nature and gastronomy.

The south of the province of Ourense combines a fascinating historical richness, unique landscapes and a gastronomy that conquers the most demanding palates. Here is a proposed itinerary to make the most of this area, very close to the Ribeira Sacra but less known.

Day 1: Lobios and the Natural Park Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés

Start the day in the Baixa Limia-Serra do Xurés Natural Park, one of the most beautiful corners of Galicia. Take a hiking route from Vilameá to discover waterfalls, native forests and ancient water mills. Do not forget to visit the ruins of Aquis Originis, a Roman mansio that evokes the important Roman past of the area.

Relax in the natural pools of the Caldo River, known for its mineral-rich thermal waters. These pools, surrounded by nature, are perfect for enjoying a refreshing bath in the open air. If you prefer something more exclusive, the Lobios spa offers thermal treatments that combine wellness and relaxation with views of the natural environment.

Day 2: Muiños and Bande, between history and landscapes

Explore the Necropolis of Maus de Salas, in Muiños, witness to the megalithic cultures that inhabited this region millennia ago. Then head to the Visigothic Temple of Santa Comba de Bande, a 7th century architectural marvel surrounded by nature.

Visit the Roman camp Aquis Querquennis, located on the banks of the As Conchas reservoir. This archaeological site allows you to walk among the remains of barracks, walls and baths of what was an important Roman military settlement on the Via Nova. Afterwards, enjoy the reservoir for water activities, relax on its river beaches, or take a stroll through the natural surroundings.

Savour an octopus ‘á feira’ accompanied by bread from Cea and a white wine from the Monterrei Designation of Origin, in one of the local restaurants in Bande.

Day 3: Celanova and surroundings

Visit Celanova, with its imposing Monastery of San Salvador and the Mozarabic chapel of San Miguel, dating back to the 10th century. It’s a perfect place to immerse yourself in Galician history and spirituality.

Head for the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Cristal, in Vilanova dos Infantes, a Baroque architectural jewel that stands out for its original glass dome. This small but unique sanctuary is just a few kilometres from Celanova. Stroll through the streets of Vilanova dos Infantes, a charming medieval village, to see its tower and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere.

End your trip with an after-dinner drink and coffee liqueur and say goodbye to the south of Ourense with the most authentic flavours of the region.

This itinerary will allow you to enjoy the essence of southern Ourense, combining its ancient history, unique landscapes and a gastronomy that is pure delight.
