Vigo is the most populated city in Galicia, well known for its port, one of the largest fishing ports in the world, the Cíes Islands, a natural paradise, the estuary …

Vigo is the most populated city in Galicia, well known for its port, one of the largest fishing ports in the world, the Cíes Islands, a natural paradise, the estuary and its biological and gastronomic wealth, its mountains, industry, Celta… But, if we want to get to know it more closely, getting into the spirit of the city, there are at least five must-see places:

In the Plaza de Compostela, in the Ensanche area of Vigo, where the most significant buildings in the city were built a couple of centuries ago, there is a very cozy park, small, classic: the Alameda. It was built at the end of the 19th century on land reclaimed from the sea, becoming the first public urban park in the city.

It has a central promenade with centuries-old vegetation around it, among which magnolias, camellias and araucarias stand out. In the center, a fountain with a good variety of jets and night lights. There are two more fountains, towards each end of the walk. And how are we doing with sculptures? Well, around the central fountain, there are three works by Camilo Nogueira (Farewell, Maternity and Peace) and a statue of Méndez Núñez, by Agustín Querol. There is also a snail, a hyena, and a swan, the work of José Luis Medina.

The area is partially pedestrianized, and has a lot of historical buildings around it: the Yáñez de Pacewicz house, the Gómez Román Post Office building, or the house of Prudencio Nandín de Jenaro de la Fuente, for example. To round off the walk, there is nothing better than going to the sea or one of the many restaurants in the area.

Let’s go from this stately neighborhood to a more popular one, where the origin of the fishing power that is Vigo is: O Berbés. It began as a group of houses for fishermen outside the walls, in the area formerly known as Ribeira. At that time, here was the port of San Xulián, on the beach, and the sea reached the houses. In the old photos you can see how it advances to the arcades. In them the boats were left and the nets were cleaned and repaired, the fish was dried and the fishing instruments were built.

Of course, what we see today has nothing to do with the images of the past. After the Ensanche, the extensions, the disappearance of the fishing quarter and its deterioration, it seems that little by little the area is recovering and more and more buildings are being rehabilitated, such as the one destined for the university headquarters or the hostel for pilgrims on the Portuguese Way along the coast.

If the origin of the fishing Vigo is in O Berbés, at the top of the city, on Mount of O Castro, are the first known settlements of the castro, from when Vigo was Vicus. This mountain has a little bit of everything. To begin with, it is a luxury to take a walk through natural paths among the trees in the very center of the city. There is also a playground, a skating and skateboarding rink, and a bike circuit that simulates the streets on a small scale, with traffic lights and everything else. On the west slope, as if on a journey through time, we can visit the remains of the castrexo site and the reconstruction of three buildings. In addition to all this, at the top is the 17th century fortress that, together with the castle of San Sebastián and the wall, defended the city.

Inside the fortress, from the top of everything, we can look out from several viewpoints with stupendous views, and enjoy the garden and the pond. The area is dotted with sculptures, some of animals, others of homage (to Curros, to Martín Códax…) and, right at the entrance to the fortress, the anchors and cannons recovered from the estuary.

Finally, on the slope of the hill that overlooks the King Square, there is a stairway that leads to a cross that is as gigantic as it is controversial.

Another must-see site in Vigo is the Porta do Sol (Sun Gate). The gate? Where is the gate? It seems that in the past one of the gates of the city was here, and that’s where the name comes from. Today there is sun, if there is, but nothing at the door. There’s Sireno since 1991, a sculpture by Leiro, who seems to be waiting for the right moment to jump into the sea down Carral street.

Porta do Sol is a lively area that connects the center with Casco Vello. It is a meeting place, with a lot of hotels and a confluence of the most commercial streets, such as the Príncipe street, and those of the foundations, theaters, banks, hotels.

Around it there are notable architectural works of modernism from Vigo, such as the Pardo Labarta building, by Jenaro de la Fuente, or the Simeón, by Gómez Román.

On the other hand, if it was already a nerve center for celebrations such as the Reconquista festival, the switching on of Christmas lights, concerts, etc… with the recent pedestrianization, the rhythm of the festival will surely increase.

From Porta do Sol we walk towards the old town, towards the sea, we find the famous A Pedra Market, a legendary classic of Vigo. Commercial activity began in the area in the 19th century, initially as a provisional market, until it was consolidated. Later, with the postwar period, the scarcity, and so close to the port… Yes, there was a bit of black market. Over time, it became a tourist attraction for this reason, but today, it has become a fully legal outlet center, with good prices on the best brands.

A few steps from the market, Rúa das Ostras (Oyster Street) awaits us, actually Rúa da Pescadería (Fishmonger Street), where, in full view of the public, the fresh Arcade oysters are prepared. And, in the entire A Pedra neighbourhood, of course, traditional Vigo catering establishments.

Hundreds of sculptures populate Galicia, to recall historical figures and events and to turn streets and squares into veritable open-air museums. They form an artistic catalogue that has been nourished …

Hundreds of sculptures populate Galicia, to recall historical figures and events and to turn streets and squares into veritable open-air museums. They form an artistic catalogue that has been nourished by the talent of dozens of creators from very different periods and styles. Among all of them, Francisco Asorey stands out especially for the recognition he already had in his time and for the influence he had among his contemporaries and later creators. The artist, born in Cambados on 4 March 1889 and who died in Compostela in 1961 (his remains rest in the Pantheon of Illustrious Galicians), is considered to be one of the most important creators in the renewal of Spanish sculpture in the 20th century. In addition, he has left us an important artistic legacy that allows us to follow his mark over a large part of Galicia and to discover a good number of personalities.

Santiago de Compostela

Monuments to St. Francis and the Sacred Heart

The city where he spent a good part of his life houses several of Francisco Asorey’s works. The most visible and important is the monument to Saint Francis of Assisi on which the sculptor worked between 1925 and 1930 to commemorate the seventh centenary of the death of the Italian saint. The sculpture is located in front of the façade of the monastery that the saint himself had ordered to be built at the beginning of the 13th century in Compostela after his pilgrimage to the tomb of the Apostle. In addition, in the courtyard of the Compañía de María school there is a sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus sculpted by Asorey in 1940.

Lalín

Monuments to Loriga and Aller

There are two works by Asorey in the municipality of Lalín, although in this case, unlike the ones in Compostela, they are not religious creations, but two pieces designed to pay homage to two outstanding personalities of the capital of the Deza region. The first, dating from 1933, is dedicated to the aviator Joaquín Loriga, famous for being part of the Elcano Squadron that completed an aerial travel between Madrid and the Philippines in 1926 and for being one of the pioneers of aviation in Galicia. His neighbours had started a popular subscription to give him an aeroplane, but after his tragic death in a plane crash in Madrid they decided to use the money to erect a monument to him, which was commissioned to Asorey and inaugurated in 1933. At the end of the 1950s, the sculptor’s talent was again called upon from Lalín to immortalise in stone another illustrious Lalín native, the mathematician, priest and astronomer Ramón María Aller Ulloa.

A Coruña

Monument to Manuel Curros Enríquez

The gestation of the imposing monument with which the city of A Coruña remembers the writer and journalist Manuel Curros Enríquez lasted almost three decades and was marked by various problems. The death of several important members of the Real Academia Galega (the entity promoting the tribute), doubts about the location of the monument, the fact that the first competition for ideas was not successful and the insufficient funds to undertake the project with which Asorey won the second competition were some of the obstacles that had to be overcome. It was finally inaugurated in 1934 in the gardens of Méndez Núñez, but the initial plan to deposit the ashes of Curros in a space provided for this purpose at the back of the building was never completed.

Samos

Monument to Father Feijóo

The sculpture with which those responsible for the monastery of San Julián de Samos wanted to commemorate the passing through the monastery of one of its most illustrious monks, Benito Jerónimo Feijóo y Montenegro, better known as Father Feijóo (1676-1764) and one of the most outstanding representatives of the Enlightenment, was also awaited. The project had begun in 1935, but had to be put on hold because of the Civil War and was not taken up again until the 1940s. Finally, the statue sculpted by Asorey and placed in the centre of the cloister named after Feijoo himself was unveiled in 1947.

Vigo

Monument to García Barbón

The importance that the businessman and patron of the arts José García Barbón (1831-1909) had in Vigo can be seen in buildings such as the theatre that bears his name and the School of Arts and Crafts. And also in the monument with which the city wanted to show its gratitude a few years after his death to this emigrant who had prospered in Cuba and who, on his return to Galicia, after spending a few years in his native Verín, decided to settle permanently in Vigo. In this case, Asorey designed a large sculpture with the figure of García Barbón seated and the god Hermes presiding over the whole from above. The piece was inaugurated in 1927 by King Alfonso XIII in the avenue also dedicated to the patron of the arts and very close to the house he had lived in the city, but years later it was moved to a roundabout in Isaac Peral street. Another work by Asorey in Vigo is the sculpture dedicated to Eduardo Cabello, the engineer responsible for the works on the city’s port. This piece is located in the Bouzas area and was inaugurated only a year after the García Barbón sculpture.

Pontevedra

Monument to Manuel Barreiro Cabanelas

Manuel Barreiro Cabanelas (1867-1950) is another emigrant who prospered in emigration (Brazil), was noted for his philanthropic works and was immortalised by Francisco Asorey. The important donations he made to the Provincial Hospital of Pontevedra, which allowed it to expand its services on several occasions, led the Provincial Council to promote the construction of a statue in the early 1940s, which has changed its location at least a couple of times, but without ever moving away from the hospital façade. It was originally located above a fountain, but this was removed during one of these changes of location.

Mondariz

Monument to Doctor Rodríguez

Also related to medicine is the sculpture unveiled in Mondariz in 1925. Maximino Rodríguez Fornos was a doctor who died as a result of a fatal infection contracted during his intervention in a complicated childbirth. In homage to his dedication and by popular subscription, Asorey was commissioned to create a piece in which, next to the bust of the honoured man, there are figures that can be interpreted both as Greek gods and as the protagonists of the episode that caused the doctor’s death.

Lugo

Monument to Mayor López Pérez

Mayor of Lugo for four different periods between 1905 and 1931, as well as being a lawyer and president of the Círculo de las Artes, Ángel López Pérez left an indelible mark on the city of the Wall to the point of being honorarily designated “perpetual mayor”. Once again, Asorey was the sculptor chosen to turn into art a tribute for posterity, which can still be seen in Rosalía de Castro Park. The sculpture, which includes a fountain and a pond, was unveiled in 1958, but plans for a neighbourhood tribute to Ángel López Pérez dated back to the early 1930s.

Marín

Statues for the Naval School

The Marín Naval Military School can boast of housing a total of four creations by Asorey. All of them were commissioned on the occasion of the transfer of the Navy’s study centre from Cádiz to Marín and its inauguration in 1943. By that date Asorey had already completed a stone sculpture dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of seafarers, and a bronze statue of Álvaro de Bazán, the famous 16th century admiral. In the following years they would be joined by busts dedicated to two other illustrious mariners: Isaac Peral and José Luis Díez.

Cangas

Monument to Soage

Another of the statues that Asorey sculpted to pay homage to a philanthropist can be found in Cangas. The monument dedicated to José Félix Soage is dated 1924 and would have been placed a year before the inauguration of the market square paid for with the donations of this emigrant in Argentina. The piece consists of a bust of Soage and the image of a sailor holding an oar and is located in the gardens that also bear the name of the philanthropist.

Cambados

Monument to Cabanillas and tributes to Asorey

The town where Asorey was born could not remain oblivious to the legacy of the sculptor. In its streets you can see the monument erected in memory of another illustrious neighbour of the town and to whom he was linked by a relationship of friendship and by various parallels in their careers: Ramón Cabanillas. The so-called “poet of the race” was honoured by the “sculptor of the race” with a piece made up of a large block of stone on a pedestal on which a bust of the writer can be seen. The work, located on the Paseo da Calzada, was inaugurated a year before the death of the sculptor, who shortly afterwards would be the recipient of his own tribute. In this case it was two of his disciples, José Cao Lata and Joaquín Gil Armada, who were in charge of shaping a piece inaugurated in 1965 in the square also dedicated to Asorey and in which, in addition to the bronze face of the sculptor, a replica of one of his most famous creations can be seen: A Naiciña.

Galicia is a welcoming land that offers a wide range of landscapes, monuments, flavours and experiences to everyone who visits it. There are proposals for the most varied public and also for groups with special needs such as the blind population. That is why, coinciding with the World Braille Day, a day in which through the vindication of this form of tactile communication we intend to fight for the rights of the visually impaired, we propose some plans to enjoy Galicia beyond sight.

Tower of Hercules

A Coruña

Letting yourself be caressed by the sea breeze and going inside the stairs of the Tower of Hercules helps to imagine the importance of a monument that was included in the select list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2009. But to better capture its magnitude, in the interpretation and visitor service centre there is a typhlological model (designed to be appreciated through touch) a little over a metre high that allows you to contemplate the architecture of this thousand-year-old tower with your fingertips.

Castrelos Sensory Garden

Vigo

Among the numerous attractions that the park of Castrelos in Vigo offers to the visitor, there is a sensory garden designed for blind people to enjoy a pleasant experience. It is a route adapted to people with sight deficiencies and articulated through tactile and olfactory stimulus. A tape guides the participant along a route that also has explanatory panels in Braille about the different species in the garden and their characteristics, as well as the history of the enclosure.

Archbishop’s Towers Interpretation Centre

Pontevedra

A fortress that has now disappeared comes to life in this interpretation centre that was created to house and publicise the ruins that were discovered during a construction works carried out in 2007. One of its main attractions is, precisely, a tactile model of the pazo-fortress labelled in Braille that allows one to imagine the appearance of this imposing construction.

Thermalism

All Galicia

The Romans and the Castrexos already knew the mineral-medicinal properties of the Galician waters, so it is not surprising that today Galicia is an unbeatable destination for thermal tourism with facilities, some of them already hundreds of years old, spread throughout the community. Whether for therapeutic purposes or to enjoy an experience that can combine aesthetics, well-being and relaxation, the spas are an ideal proposal for blind people as well. All you have to do is close your eyes and enjoy.

Gastronomy

All Galicia

A visit to Galicia would be incomplete if it did not include its gastronomic section as a highlight. The vegetable garden and the Galician waters nourish from the best product a recipe book full of tasty proposals capable of stimulating all the senses, but especially smell and taste. Cities, towns and villages offer a wide range of establishments where visual deficiencies will not be an obstacle to enjoy this land with the palate.

Sensations in the sea

Rías Baixas

Several regional entities that group together municipalities of the Galician coast have developed in recent years tourism initiatives aimed at the blind population. This is the case of the Sentir o Mar project, born to promote inclusive tourism in the Muros and Noia estuary and which has already allowed a group of blind people to become familiar with the world of navigation. Other proposals launched by the municipalities of the Arousa Norte association and by private companies in the Rías Baixas are aimed at this same public, such as diving centres that organise diving baptisms and boat trips to get to know the importance of the mussel industry and taste its tasty products.

Illas Cíes

Vigo

Blind people are welcome to the crown jewel of the Illas Atlánticas de Galicia National Park. The ban on introducing domestic animals by visitors does not apply to guide dogs and among the information material available to those who come to the archipelago there are brochures in Braille. Guided tours with groups of people with disabilities have been common practice for years.

All big cities are, when it comes down to it, the cluster of several smaller towns that have merged with the main area. Vigo is no exception: the enormous growth it experienced in the heat of the twentieth century industrialization caused the city to annex a large number of parishes that were once separated from downtown by meadows and crops, and that today are fully integrated into the urban area. Almost all of them retained their own special character, and one of the most proud of its past is Bouzas, which, in facr, was an independent council until a little over a century ago.

The view from the sea of the old Bouzas area quickly demonstrates its status as a town in its own right: low seafaring houses clinging to the ocean’s shore, an old bell tower presiding over the image… Until 1904 and after half a millennium of administrative independence, Bouzas was a distinct municipality, focused on the fishing industry and, considering the many bourgeois houses that are preserved around the church of San Miguel, a very prosperous one.

It is precisely around this temple that Bouzas’ historical attractive is concentrated. The church of San Miguel has roots in the sixteenth century. Originally, it was located practically on the ocean shore and behind it the old parish grew. The seafaring houses that can be seen today while walking along the promenade are a reminder of a time when a large part of the city’s traditional fishing activities was centered here. The construction of the Vigo port and the subsequent expansions of the pier substantially changed the current perception of Bouzas, although the older streets between the sea and the Suarez Llanos square still retain that old flavour.

And also a taste of the modern: many of the buildings that are still preserved, built between the nineteenth and the twentieth century, currently host catering establishments that happen to be among the best and most innovative bars in Vigo. The tapeo is a religion in Bouzas, and visitors can spend a fantastic day touring the urban beach, the streets and the terraces, tasting the more traditional proposals and, right next to them, contemporary recipes that very often triumph in regional competitions. In many of the establishments they will be happy to tell you the history of the place: ask and you will discover that, where there is a restaurant today, many years ago a carpenter worked or salt was stored to preserve sea products. It is also worth getting lost in the corridors of the food market or visiting the traditional shops, which endure in this place where, as its inhabitants say, one is in Vigo without being in Vigo. Bouzas also holds several markets that are among the most popular in the city.

At first a neighbourhood of fishermen, later home to shipyards and industries, Bouzas also has the honour of having one of the oldest football teams in Galicia, the Club Rápido de Bouzas, already with a century of history behind it.

“Ondas do mar de Vigo, se vistes meu amigo? E ai Deus!, se verra cedo?” (Waves of the sea of Vigo, have you seen my friend? Oh, God! Will he …

“Ondas do mar de Vigo, se vistes meu amigo? E ai Deus!, se verra cedo?” (Waves of the sea of Vigo, have you seen my friend? Oh, God! Will he come soon?) These are probably the best-known verses of the medieval Galician-Portuguese lyric. They were written by Martín Códax in the thirteenth century and are contained within one of the great treasures of Galician literature of all times, the Vindel parchment. This songbook can be seen until March at the Museo do Mar (Sea Museum) of Vigo, a place that already in itself is worth a visit.

The Vindel connects Galician culture with its brightest past. During the thirteenth century several troubadours such as Martín Códax, Alfonso X the Wise, Don Dinís, Airas Nunez or Pero Meogo composed dozens of cantigas (songs) that had great repercussion among the poets of half of Europe. These compositions were collected in codices like the one now displayed in Vigo.

But the Vindel has a feature that makes it unique, beyond the beauty and quality of its author’s verses: in addition to the lyrics, the copyist wrote down the music that should accompany the poems. The history of the songbook is very curious, since it was a bookseller from Madrid, Pedro Vindel, who in 1914 found the codex enveloping a book by Cicero from the fourteenth century. Vindel showed the cantigas to Víctor Said Armesto, an expert in medieval literature, who confirmed the authenticity and transcendence of the seven cantigas contained within the parchment.

The bookseller sold it years later and the Vindel began a pilgrimage that would take it first to Sweden and finally to the Morgan Library in New York, where it has remained since 1977. From there it departed, for a few months, to return to the land where it was composed and which its songs speak of. This is, therefore, a unique opportunity to see a key fragment of the history of Galicia.

The parchment contains seven compositions and the exhibition at the Museo do Mar de Vigo is based on each of them to divide the experience. Accompanied by other medieval and contemporary literary pieces, the Vindel is the perfect excuse to explore what society was like at the time it was written. The exhibition consists of more than fifty sacred sculptures, archaeological remains, paintings and other documents that transport the visitor to a Vigo estuary much different from the current one, but just as rich and alive.

The Vindel parchment exhibition is a great opportunity to visit the Museo do Mar a unique building since its conception. Designed by architects Aldo Rossi, initially, and César Portela, it makes use of part of the old Alcabre-Molino de Viento cannery, from the nineteenth century, integrating it into a series of buildings inspired by the old industrial warehouse. Through the permanent exhibition it is possible to learn how the ocean marked the daily life of this part of Galicia, from the first forms of fishing to the current industrialization, from the simple techniques used to collect fish until not too long ago to the large freezer boats and the modern technologies of packaging and preserving, in which Galicia continues to be a leader.

The museum is set by the sea, in a small beach where fishermen still work like they did in the old days. One of its biggest attractions, which will delight the children, is the aquarium, where you can see the species that inhabit the estuary’s seabed: bream, conger, turbot, sardines or flounder share their habitat with lobsters, king crabs and starfish, displaying the richness of the “sea of Vigo” to which Martín Códax, 800 years ago, threw questions impossible to answer.

Coloured lights adorning the streets, Christmas carols in every corner, decorated wooden booths… These are unmistakable signs that Christmas has arrived. Almost every city and town in Galicia organizes a market at this time of year in which neighbours and visitors can buy holiday presents ones and admire, as they stroll, the work of many craftsmen. These are six of the many appointments of this kind that take place in Galicia.

Christmas Market of Santiago de Compostela

The Christmas Market of Santiago de Compostela opened on Carreira do Conde street this past December 2nd and will be available until January 6th. It is worth consulting its website to check the hours at which they carry out activities, intended for children, among which are workshops to make cork objects, refrigerator magnets, or Christmas cards, popular games and classes taught by the market’s own exhibitors. Among them there are artisans that work wood or leather, or make toys, jewelry or decoration pieces.

Besides this, artists and artisans join each year at the Mercado da Estrela (“Star’s Market”), which is held halfway between the Museo do Pobo Galego and Plaza 8 de Marzo, in Compostela. Its sixth edition begins today, Friday, and lasts until Sunday the 17th, bringing together creators of handmade design products and also gourmet food producers, artists and painters, new musicians who offer intimate concerts… An ideal occasion to buy a creative, original and unique present for this Christmas.

Christmas Village in A Coruña

In A Coruña the center of Christmas activity is the María Pita square, occupied these days by a beautiful town made of snow-covered houses and colourful lights. In this area activities for children, theatre, magicians’ performances, concerts or workshops take place. In the Christmas Village, attractions for children have been installed, such as a carousel, a train, inflatables, a Ferris wheel, a snowboard simulator and various games.

Market in the Rúa do Príncipe in Vigo

The Rúa do Príncipe, in the centre of Vigo, has been the stage of a Christmas market for years, organized by the merchants of the area. Located on this occasion on London Street, behind the MARCO museum, it has an interesting representation of organic food producers, as well as food and craft stalls. It will be open until January 5th. It is also convenient to keep up with the local press, since in the city several Christmas-related markets and activities are carried out in neighbourhoods such as Bouzas or Coia and in some shopping centres.

Nadalear in Pontevedra

Pontevedra holds from the 16th of December until the eve of the Wise Men day (January 5th) a Christmas market located in the Teucro square, in the historic center. The city has an intensive program for these dates with concerts, theatre, charity galas and a festival of Christmas carols that are sung, as they were in the old times, in the taverns of the monumental area.

Market in San Marcos Square in Lugo

Lugo will also have a crafts market this Christmas. It will be assembled in the centric San Marcos Square and will be open from December 21st to January 5th. The visit to this exhibition can be complemented with the numerous activities programmed for children and adults, including artistic walks along the Original Way to Santiago, music, puppets and exhibitions in the old city jail or in the spectacular Interactive Museum of History of Lugo.

The Cíes Islands is a national park located off the coast not far from the town of Vigo in Galicia. Its remote location, a 40 minute boat ride from both Vigo or Baiona, has made the island a paradise in the summer time. Fantastic beaches and generally nice weather in the summer.

In the summer time there are several boats that leave each day. This makes it easy to visit the island, on a day trip, from for example the town of Santiago de Compostela. The train station in Vigo is just a short walk from the port where the boats leave for the Cíes Islands.

To check train timetables, have a look at www.renfe.es and have a look at this webpage from the local tourist office for updated time schedules for the boats.

For those interesting in staying the night on the island, the camping on the Island is your only option.

In 2008 The Guardian ranked this island and its beaches among the “Top 10 beaches of the World”. They say:

“Mention Spanish beaches and most people instinctively think of the Mediterranean. Yet the wilder, stunning Atlantic coastline of Galicia, just north of Portugal, has far more dramatic praias – with far fewer people on them. One of the jewels of this coast is on Las Islas Cíes, a 40-minute boat trip from the pretty town of Baiona. Once a pirates’ haunt, Cíes is now an uninhabited and pristine national park, open to the public only in summer. Galegos come here to spend long, lazy summer days on the Praia das Rodas, a perfect crescent of soft, pale sand backed by small dunes sheltering a calm lagoon of crystal-clear sea.”

This itinerary skirts the municipal borders of Vigo across its mountainous side, giving remarkable views of the city and the ria.

It is a route designed to show people from this large city the natural environment that spreads out just a few metres from their homes. A series of forest parks have been located in parishes in Vigo District which, equipped with everything necessary for leisure and rest, are decisive in this pathway’s massive success at weekends.

There is also place for history, however: the Fragoselo petroglyphs, the dolmens in the area of El Mercantil and the remains of the old defensive wall of Monte O Galiñeiro.

Rural architecture in Chandebrito and Fraga, the beautiful site of the As Maquías mill on the River Zamáns, autochthonous forests and this whole natural environment far removed from the hustle and bustle of the city, making this a highly attractive and much visited pathway.

ACCESSES – By town bus to Saiáns, A Garrida, University, Rebullón, Airport and A Madroa. In Saiáns, leave from the Church of San Xurxo. In A Madroa set off from in front of the zoo.

DISTANCE – 58.2 km in total. The main pathway covers 39.9 km and the variations GR 53.1 and 53.2 cover a distance of 8.1 and 10.2 km respectively.

POINT OF DEPARTURE / ARRIVAL – Saiáns (Vigo) / A Madroa (Vigo).

ROUTE – Saiáns, A Garrida, Puxeiros and A Madroa.

DIFFICULTY – Medium. This is a very long route, so it is recommended to be tackled over several days. It has a large number of ups and downs although the going is quite gentle.

DURATION – 19 hours.

CONNECTIONS – With PR-G 1, 5, 9 and with GR 58 and 94.

MATERIAL – If the plan is to do the whole pathway in a weekend, you will need enough equipment. Water is easy to find all along the route.

SERVICES – Provisions in the towns surrounding Vigo.

ENVIRONMENT – Not free of risks

ITINERARY – The pathway is clearly laid out and marked

DISTANCE TRAVELLED – Going over varied terrain

EFFORT – More than 10 hour’s walk

ACCESS BY BICYCLE – Partially suitable.

ACCESS ON HORSEBACK – Totally suitable.
