Easter is a time that is experienced with great intensity throughout Galicia, but especially in those towns and cities where religious events are particularly deeply rooted and traditional. There are nine towns and cities where these celebrations boast unique characteristics that have led to their events being declared of tourist interest. And although all of them will be affected by the restrictions imposed by covid and the decision not to hold processions to avoid crowds, none of them want to give up their place in the annual calendar of festivities. Their organisers are already preparing alternative proposals so that the pandemic does not defeat devotion and tradition.

Viveiro

This town in the Lugo region of A Mariña boasts a Holy Week that has been declared a festival of international tourist interest and stands out, among other reasons, for the artistic value of its images, some of which are articulated. The «Paso» of the Supper, created at the beginning of the 19th century by a craftsman using local sailors as models to shape the figures of the Apostles, is more than two hundred years old. The processions of the Last Supper, The Arrest, The Encounter and The Holy Burial are some of the most emotional and colourful of its usual calendar. This year it will not be possible to enjoy them in the street to avoid crowds, but worship will continue in the churches and exhibitions and virtual activities will be organised.

More information at http://semanasantaviveiro.com/

Ferrol

Since 2014, Easter Week in Ferrol has also been recognised as a festival of international tourist interest. From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the five brotherhoods of the city organise a total of 24 processions that fill the streets of Ferrol with fervour and colour. The main events take place between the neighbourhoods of Esteiro and A Magdalena on Wednesday, Thursday and Good Friday. This year, these processions will be replaced by alternative events, which will take place in the headquarters of each Easter brotherhood and in the Angustias, Amboage and Contralmirante Azarola Gresillón squares, respecting the sanitary measures and the capacity restrictions established by the authorities.

More information at http://www.semanasantaferrol.org/

Santiago de Compostela

The streets of the city of the Apostle are the unbeatable setting for the development of a Holy Week of regional tourist interest that has undergone an intense revitalisation in recent years, as demonstrated by the fact that Compostela now has more than a dozen brotherhoods. Its members are responsible for organising the 17 processions which recreate the main episodes of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The events planned for this occasion will take place between 26 March and 11 April, although the processions will also be dispensed with in order to avoid the health risks associated with crowds of people. Instead, the activities organised by the confraternities will be moved to their own headquarters and other enclosed spaces where capacity can be controlled and health measures can be complied with.

More information at https://www.semanasantasantiago.es/es/inicio/

Fisterra

The traditional festivities of Easter Week in Fisterra, also declared a festivity of Galician tourist interest, add a singular recreation in this town of the Costa da Morte that year after year congregates thousands of people, becoming the main event of its extensive programme. It takes place on Easter Sunday and the locals themselves are responsible for bringing to life the protagonists of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As last year, the promoters of the activities have had to cancel the processions and the aforementioned representation, but the liturgical acts planned inside the parish church of Santa María das Areas are maintained, and to avoid that the capacity limitations prevent the faithful and the curious from taking part, the Xunta de Confrarías da Semana Santa de Fisterra will broadcast them live through its space on Facebook.

More information at https://www.facebook.com/semanasanta.fisterra/

Lugo

The celebration of alternative activities centred on the processions that should take place every day is the idea on which those in charge of the board of brotherhoods of Lugo are working to keep Holy Week alive in the city of the wall, a festival also of regional interest. Thus, the neighbours will not be able to see the procession of the Holy Sacrament (a singular event linked to the privilege that the Cathedral enjoys to exhibit it permanently) nor the colourful encounter between Jesus Christ and the Virgin, but they will be able to join, with the consequent capacity limitations, the events that will be organised on special days such as Palm Sunday, and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

More information at http://www.semanasantadelugo.com/es/noticias

Mondoñedo

The processions that take place from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday make Holy Week one of the main festivities in the Mondoñedo calendar and have led to it also being considered a festival of tourist interest in Galicia. Its origins date back to at least the 16th century, and although on this occasion the locals will not be able to take to the streets to attend these acts of great fervour and solemnity, they will be able to go to the monumental cathedral to follow the different masses planned throughout this festive cycle.

More information at https://www.facebook.com/turismomondonedo

Betanzos

Declared of regional tourist interest in 2017, the Holy Week of Betanzos stands out especially for the processions of Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, being the one popularly known as Os Caladiños the most famous of them all. For the second consecutive year, the streets will not be the scene of the traditional route of the «pasos» and the brotherhoods and Nazarenes, but the liturgical acts will keep their spirit alive and the social networks will contribute to their promotion as it happened a year ago, when they were broadcast through the YouTube channel of the Pastoral Unit of Betanzos.

More information at https://www.facebook.com/semanasantabetanzos

Cangas

The artistic value of its «pasos», some of them articulated to give more realism to the celebration, its antiquity and its roots make the Holy Week of Cangas one of the most outstanding in the province of Pontevedra and also allowed it to be declared of tourist interest in Galicia. Some of its brotherhoods were founded three centuries ago and their work has contributed to the fact that processions such as the Holy Supper, the Denial of St. Peter or the Holy Meeting attract large crowds. None of them will go out this year, but some liturgical acts are maintained and brotherhoods such as the Hermandad de los Dolores y la Soledad encourage residents to decorate their balconies with commemorative flags.

More information at https://cangas.gal/es/areas/turismo/fiestas-y-festivales/semana-santa

Paradela (Meis)

The involvement of the entire parish of Paradela, in the municipality of Meis, Pontevedra, has made its Easter Week one of the most outstanding in Galicia and therefore also of regional tourist interest. The locals themselves become actors for a few days to give life to the main characters of the central episodes of the biblical story: the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, the arrest of Christ, the trial, the Stations of the Cross…. All of these are re-enactments which, like a year ago, will fall out of the programme of activities on this occasion due to the covid restrictions, although the brotherhood will probably once again take advantage of social networks to organise a Virtual Holy Week.

The rivers and paths of Galicia are full of ancient bridges that have survived to this day so that we can enjoy their beauty and their architectural and heritage value. …

The rivers and paths of Galicia are full of ancient bridges that have survived to this day so that we can enjoy their beauty and their architectural and heritage value. But also to preserve an important immaterial value as reminders of stories, fables and rites. In this blog we would like to invite you to get to know some of these legendary bridges.

O Demo Bridge

Silleda and Vila de Cruces

The name of this bridge of medieval construction and a single arch built over the Deza River and located in the vicinity of the monastery of San Lorenzo de Carboeiro is not accidental. Legend has it that it was the devil himself who built it after a deal with the monks, who were tired of seeing how the floods caused damage to the viaducts they had built earlier. The monks undertook to hand over the souls of the dead to the devil during a Sunday day, but when the day came, they prolonged the prayers throughout the day in order to avoid fulfilling the agreement.

Pontedeume Bridge

Pontedeume

Although today the name of the town of Pontedeume is clearly linked to the river that bathes its lands, the Eume, there is also room for legend here. In this case, the story that has survived to the present day speaks of how the monumental viaduct that links this municipality and Cabanas was built by the devil to capture the soul of a beautiful young woman who owned land on both banks and who had been trapped on the opposite side of her castle. As in the previous case, they also avoided the devil and from that episode only the name Ponte do Demo would remain, although it was reconverted over the centuries in Pontedeume.

Gatín Bridge

Becerreá

The intervention of the devil is also present in the legend that gave its name to this pass over the Navia River located in the municipality of Becerreá in Lugo. The riverbed separated a couple of lovers who made a pact with the devil to give him a newborn baby if he built a bridge that would allow them to meet. The devil agreed and raised the viaduct, but the couple gave him some newborn cats so that they would not have to give him the child they were expecting. Hence the name of the place.

O Pasatempo Bridge

Mondoñedo

Formerly known as Ponte dos Ruzos, this viaduct located on the edge of the town of Mondoñedo owes its current name to a story in which history and legend are mixed and which links it directly to the tragic end of Mariscal Pardo de Cela. This famous nobleman was condemned to death by the Catholic Monarchs for confronting them, and although his wife, Isabel de Castro, managed to get him pardoned, she did not arrive in time to hand over the document and avoid execution. The delay took place precisely on that bridge. Legend has it that the Canons of Mondoñedo, the Marshal’s enemies, kept Isabel de Castro there long enough to prevent her from delivering the news of the pardon and having the sentence carried out.

As Febres Bridge

Tui

Here again, history and legend come together to explain the name of this small viaduct located on the outskirts of Tui, on the old road to Compostela and the road where pilgrims on the Portuguese Way still travel today. The fevers that give it its name are those of the illness that forced San Telmo to interrupt his journey to Santiago and that would cause his death a few days later. The bridge would be the place where he felt the effects of the disease. Once there, he decided to cancel the pilgrimage and return to the city of which he was later named patron saint.

A Ramallosa Bridge

Nigrán and Baiona

The figure of San Telmo is also linked to the medieval viaduct that links the municipalities of Nigrán and Baiona. In this case, legend has it that a great storm hit the place while the saint was preaching to the faithful. Those present tried to flee in fear, but the saint managed to open a clearing between the clouds and prevent the bridge from suffering the effects of the storm. This is not the only legend that has inspired this viaduct. The bridge was also, in times, the scene of fertility rites.

Os Padriños Bridge

Ribadumia and Vilanova de Arousa

The bridge that joins the two halves of the Ponte Arnelas village separated by the River Umia is also a place related to ancient fertility practices. And it is these rites that have led to the viaduct being known as the Os Padriños Bridge (Godfathers Bridge). According to tradition, those women who had not been able to carry previous pregnancies to full term had to go to the bridge and ask the first man who crossed it if he could pour water from the River Umia onto her belly. Afterwards, a small party was celebrated on the spot and the dishes were thrown into the river. If the pregnancy ended positively, the stranger would became the newborn’s godfather.

A Ponte Maceira

Ames and Negreira

Located in the middle of Fisterra Way, A Ponte Maceira viaduct is linked to a legend related to the Apostle Santiago. The story explains that a group of disciples who had escaped from the Roman captivity crossed the Tambre River through a viaduct, the As Pías´ Bridge, which collapsed when the legionaries who were trying to hunt them down were crossing it. Although there are several locations where this episode has been situated, the link between A Ponte Maceira and the Jacobean phenomenon has meant that this supposed relationship with the old As Pías´ Bridge has taken on a special intensity in this place.

Furelos River Bridge

Antas de Ulla

It is said that on one of the stones of this bridge located over the river that gives it its name, it is possible to see the outline of a hand. According to the legend, it is the mark left by the «mouro» (a character from Galician mythology) who built the bridge on behalf of the neighbours. This «mouro» had finished the work leaving a stone badly placed so that the structure trembled with the aim of forcing the locals to pay him again for the repair. When he saw that the stratagem had taken effect he repeated it successfully several times. But when the neighbours realised what was happening, they decided to teach him a lesson by heating the badly placed stone with fire in such a way that when the «mouro» move it, his hand was burned and engraved there.

As Partidas Bridge

Ponteareas

Two legendary stories already mentioned converge in this medieval bridge built over the River Tea. One of them tells us that it was built by the «mouros» and the other refers to the fertility rite according to which the woman who wanted to carry her pregnancy to term had to ask a stranger if he could pour water from the river onto her belly. As in other places, the legend here also includes a small feast, the pouring of the remains of the celebration into the river and for the stranger to become the child’s godfather. In addition, the origin of the name of the bridge also moves in this terrain halfway between history and legend. There are those who maintain that it is known as the bridge of As Partidas because it was the usual meeting place of a group of thieves to distribute their booty, but others defend that it owes that name to the fact that it served as a meeting place for a group of knights before they left for the fight.

Ponte do Demo

Ponte do Pasatempo

A Ponte Maceira

Ames y Negreira

Ponteareas

With almost nine centuries of history, the Feiras e Festas das San Lucas can boast seniority and vitality. Its origins are attributed to the time of Bishop Martín, which began this celebration in 1246 on the occasion of the consecration of the Mondoñedo Cathedral. But there are those who go even further back in time and point out that it was King Alfonso VII who in 1156 authorized an eight-day party in the municipality founding the current celebration. In the Municipality of Mondoñedo they are clear and explain that these background converts As San Lucas «in the oldest fairs of Galicia, the old Kingdom of León and the fifth oldest in Spain”. And so have also recognized other administrations giving it the consideration of a tourist interest.

Initially it was developed in the month of August, but the obligations of the agricultural calendar became displaceable until mid-October. What has not changed despite the passage of time is that As San Lucas is a celebration of as much tradition as ethnographic value that has preserved its most characteristic elements.

The cattle continue to play a central role in the program of events and each day of the celebrations maintains a particular nomenclature. The arrival of the horses to the fairgrounds and the walk on Vespers Day (Thursday 17th), the traditional horse fair and the Galician walking contest on As San Lucas Day (Friday 18th), the morphological contest of Galician horses and mares of the Middle Day (Saturday 19th), and the trotting horse contest of the Day das Maulas (Sunday 20th) are some of the appointments that will gather more attention these days in Mondoñedo as it has been going on for centuries.

The party has also managed to make room for modernity and there are many proposals that complement and enrich its program year after year: popular meals, proclamation (this year with Manuel Lourenzo), parades, theater, tributes to illustrious characters born in the town (Pascual Veiga and Noriega Varela this time) and verbenas will not be missing even this time.

This year also, coinciding with the 800th anniversary of the beginnings of the construction of the Mondoñedo Cathedral, As San Lucas will add another attraction: an Inter-Celtic Festival organized with the sponsorship of the Consellería de Cultura e Turismo through the program O Teu Xacobeo. It will take place on Saturday 19th making the town a meeting point for lovers of folk music. The Cathedral Square will be filled with music with the performance of an outstanding representation of the music made in Galicia and in other countries of Celtic tradition. A group of bagpipers will kick off the evening playing from the towers of the Cathedral. Then, the Asturian piper Brais Rodrigo, Xabier Díaz and Adufeiras de Salitre, the Irish group Lunasa and the French Gwendal will be in charge of putting the golden clasp in a centenary celebration that continues to ooze vitality.

The word «cathedral» derives from “cathedra”, the place where the bishop sits when presiding over the liturgical offices. Consequently, Galicia has five cathedrals, the same ammount as the ecclesiastical provinces in which it is divided. A trip through them is a flight through the ancient Galician geography of the time when dozens of churches flourished in the country: the Romanesque years.

Between the eleventh and twelfth centuries, with most of the Iberian peninsula dominated by the Muslims, this art, the first entirely European, took root in the Cantabrian coast. The five Galician cathedrals are among the finest examples of the style.

Undoubtedly, the most visited one nowadays is the Cathedral of Santiago, seat of the Archbishopric of Santiago. Although construction on the old hill of Libredón began right after the discovery of the body of the Apostle in 814, the works on the existing church began in 1075 under the orders of a certain Bernardo the Old. Its original entrance, the Portico da Gloria of Maestro Mateo, is surely the most perfect example of Romanesque sculptural art and is currently in the process of restoration. The three tall and slender naves of the temple defy the prejudice that the architecture of the time was dark, mysterious.

The construction of the Cathedral of Mondoñedo started in the twelfth century. It is unmistakable because of the spectacular rose window that gives light to the main nave. Located today in a quiet village in the north of the province of Lugo, the beginning of its existence was anything but tranquil. In fact, its current location is not the original one: the bishopric was located a few kilometers north for three centuries, in San Martiño de Mondoñedo, closer to the sea, a location that was too exposed to frequent attacks of Norman pirates and Vikings. Today Mondoñedo shares with Ferrol the status of capital of the dioceses.

A little further south, less than an hour by car, is the Cathedral of Lugo, closely linked to the Jacobean Route. Also begun in the 12th century, its neoclassical facade looks soberly towards the Gate of Santiago, the entrance point of the pilgrims to the interior of the Roman wall. It is quite an experience to climb to the old bell tower and see, from the top and beneath the bells, the city at your feet and the mountains, often snowed, to the east.

Following the line towards the south is the Cathedral of Ourense, dedicated to San Martiño, saint of great devotion in Galicia. It was consecrated in 1188 and its southern facade, overlooking the Praza do Trigo, with its battlements, its Romanesque door and its clock finished in the XIV, immediately transports those who look upon it to the medieval past. Around it, the years wove a labyrinth of streets that make up old Ourense, plentyfull of other type of more profane temples, those of the gastronomy.

Finally there is the cathedral of the border, the Cathedral of Tui. Today it shares the capital status with Santa Maria de Vigo. Its situation in an elevation on the Miño river, overlooking Portugal, conferred it that characteristic appearence of a church-castle. Although most of the building was finished in 1180, the addition a century later of a spectacular Gothic entrance made it unique in Galicia.

Granite and Romanesque characterise the five episcopal sees of Galicia. We could add to them other Cathedrals, those of Ribadeo, carved by the sea on the coast of slate. But that’s another story.
