Looking for a comfortable route to do as a family? In Galicia there are many: by sea, by mountains, by river… Let’s prepare the backpack with the snack and… let’s go! Here are a few ideas:

Mythological path – Monte Viso, Santiago de Compostela. Since 2020, on the ascent to Mount Viso, we are accompanied by the best-known fantastic characters of Galician tradition: Lamia, a mixture of a woman and a snake that inhabits rivers, fountains and springs; the Nubeiro, a kind of Galician Zeus, who causes thunder by hitting his clogs; the Coca, autochthonous dragon, very loved in Redondela; Breogán, father of our mythology; the Mouros, surrounded by underground treasures; the Meigas, between witches and healers; the Gatipedro, a cat with a horn on its head; the Biosbardos, nocturnal and elusive… The path runs like this very entertaining, and along the way we meet the protagonists of Galician mythology (through the sculptures of José Manuel Méndez Rodríguez). At the top of the mountain there is a great view of the city and its surroundings (Gaiás, O Pico Sacro, Monte do Gozo…).

Verdes Refuge, Coristanco. (A Coruña). In this fishing preserve in Verdes, in the municipality of Coristanco, there is a beautiful route of about 500 m that goes along the right bank of the Anllóns river, from Muíño de Pose to As Sangueiroas. Here, the rocks appear in the river bed like small islands, between rapids and waterfalls. It combines perfectly with the stupendous riverside forest, with a lot of alder, willow, ash, dragnet… There are several wooden bridges to better enjoy the landscape and access the paths on each bank of the river. The refuge also has a recreational area, with benches, tables and even grills for cooking. We can continue another 1 km to Ponte Dona, which joins the municipalities of Coristanco and Ponteceso. If we want to walk, the long option ends in Ponteceso in about 14 km.

From Praia Maior to Santo Hadrián, Malpica (A Coruña). We continue in A Costa da Morte, but this time facing the sea. This is a very suitable path to do with the family, without much walking and with the added benefit of having the beach nearby. It is linear, 3.5 km long, and leaves from the Malpica Promenade, where the Area Maior and Canido beaches are, and follows the coast to the west. In the Seaia area there is a recreational area, in case we want to make a stop. From here we climb up the hill to the viewpoint and the Santo Hadrián hermitage, including a miraculous fountain. If we want the combined route + festival, we have to plan the excursion for the day of Carmen, in which the pilgrimage extends through the mountains. That the staff is tired? So, after enjoying the views, with the Sisargas in the foreground, we return the way we came. What do we want more? Well, we can take the opportunity to continue climbing to the top of the mountain. There, a path leads us to the Seaia sandbank.

Mera coastal path (A Coruña). It is the easiest route of those that go through the natural monument of the Dexo – Serantes coast. It is circular, 3 km long, and runs along the coastline of Mera, in the municipality of Oleiros. Start in Canide’s Sea Classroom. In addition to the views of the A Coruña estuary and the beaches, the main points of interest are the chapel of Santa Ana, in Maianca; O Espiñeiro beach, in Serantes; the Mera lighthouses and the Aula del Mar. There is a small detour to get closer to the Mera lagoon, where there are ducks, swans, geese… There is also a children’s playground. If we do the route in good weather, we can extend it a few hours to go down to the sand. By the way, you can also go by bike.

Lighthouse Route, Ons Island, Bueu. (Pontevedra). This is a circular route of 4 km, suitable for all types of public, also attractive because of the previous trip by boat and the beaches. It leaves the neighborhood of Curro. On the way to the lighthouse, we go past the Area dos Cans beach, to Laxe do Crego and, between houses, granaries and old laundries, we come to the Cucorno neighborhood, the highest village on the island. A little more and we went to the lighthouse, surrounded by the inlet of Caniveliñas. From here we can choose to turn around or link to the southern route.

Guitiriz water route (Lugo). The entire route covers 20 km, so the best way to go with the family is to do a stretch. It starts in Santo Alberte, in the parish of Sambreixo, on the banks of the Parga river. In the middle of the forest we come across the large Gothic chapel of Santo Alberte, near the medieval bridge and the fountain. Near there we have the viewpoint of Sambreixo, which offers us a panoramic view of the area. The entire route joins the medicinal springs of Guitiriz, that had a famous spa resort. The first stretch, for 4 km, leads to the Valdomín fountain, in Parga. The more walkers can continue at the San Xoán spring, in Lagostelle, and finish off at the Pardiñas spring, in Pardiñas. In total it would be almost 20 km.

Route of Armea, Allariz. (Ourense). This is an archaeological route wrapped in legend. It begins in the church of Santa Mariña de Augas Santas, dedicated to the memory of the martyr Santa Mariña, harassed and tortured by a Roman prefect, who was saved by Saint Peter from burning to death in the oven with a bath of fresh water. But he couldn’t save her from being beheaded… Legend has it that where the head bounced when it fell, water gushed out, and that’s where the holy water comes from, of course. 1 km from there, on Mount Señoriño, is the archaeological site of the castro de Armea, a cibdá full of vestiges of the Roman past. In the area, the legend of Santa Mariña reappears in the Basilica of the Ascension, with a crypt and the supposed oven in which the saint was burned.

Many times, when the weather is not good, we lack plans to carry out as a family and it is difficult to entertain the children. Luckily in Galicia we have several parks and gardens designed and thought for family entertainment, so today we recommend some of the most interesting:

Park of the senses. Marin

Located in the old Briz Farm, very close to the center of Marín, is this original park that, as its name suggests, is designed to be enjoyed with the five senses.

Figures carved in the trees, the noise of the water in waterfalls and ponds, games of skill for adults and children, and the smell of fruit trees and species that are grown throughout the farm, accompany us throughout the journey.

In addition, the park has a children’s area with large slides and climbing nets. Everything is designed to spend a good afternoon with the family.

Pasatempo Park. Betanzos

This curious park was inaugurated in 1914 and reflected the various trips around the world of its creator, D. Juan García Naveira. It was the first theme park in the world and it even appeared in the travel guides of the time. It was also very visited by pilgrims who traveled the English Way.

The park was designed to be divided into two parts: the Gardens, in the English romantic style, were the largest part, with long walks, sculptures and ponds. The new facilities are now located on it. On the other hand, the Pasatempo or Encyclopedic Park of Attractions, which is the area that is still preserved and is divided into five levels connected by artificial caves and gardens full of curious and imaginative objects.

The new area houses ponds, gardens and an open-air auditorium.

Undoubtedly a place worth visiting and that will not leave anyone indifferent.

Eirís Park. A Coruña

It occupies a huge area in the Coruña neighborhood of the same name.

The park is divided into different areas where we can have fun jumping down its long slides, the double zip line or going up a climbing net; strolling around the park and the pond or approaching the ruins of the Castle of Eirís and enjoying unbeatable views over the pier of A Coruña.

The park also has a children’s playground, an area for dogs and a large pergola to shelter from the sun

Nature Circuit of the Footbridge over the Mao River. Ribeira Sacra

It is not really a park, but this short route, just 1.8 km long and which runs through the trees in the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, can delight the little ones in the house.

Starting at an old hydroelectric power station (the La Fábrica de la Luz hostel), the walkway runs parallel to the Mao River until it flows into the Sil River, allowing you to enjoy a beautiful view over the river canyons.

In addition, at the Fábrica de la Luz they have the possibility of camping among the trees, quite an adventure!

Laberinto Costa Mariña Recreational Park. Rinlo

The main attraction of this park located in the Mariña Lucense is the labyrinth, with almost 4,000 meters, and which is one of the largest in Spain. After going through the labyrinth, you reach the central viewpoint from which you can appreciate the impressive structure and appreciate the views of the coast and mountains.

The park also has several play and entertainment areas.

A Canuda Park. Salvaterra de Miño

Finally, we can go to Salvaterra de Miño and enjoy the long walk that runs along the banks of the river Miño. We can walk or bike, as it has a bike path and bike rental. At the end we can rest while the children have fun in its huge playground or in the traffic education circuit (with traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, etc).

The park also has a small mini zoo and even a lake where you can take a boat ride. A perfect plan to spend a day with the family.
