In this time of year the festive calendar begins to fill with dates marked in red. Corpus celebrations and other ethnographic acts that have been declared of tourist interest should already be in full countdown or filling the streets of towns and cities with animation and fun. But the covid has caused that many of these festivities have been suspended. Even so, the organizers have not wanted to completely give up their appointment with tradition and are promoting alternative celebrations to keep alive the flame of the festivities.

Corpus Christi

Ponteareas

Declared a international festival of tourist interest, the Corpus Christi of Ponteareas is famous for the spectacular images of floral carpets covering the streets of that town in Pontevedra. On this occasion, the tradition that dates back to at least the mid-19th century will have to be postponed until 2021, but the municipal officials and the representatives of the volunteers groups have agreed to carry out a campaign to disseminate this ethnographic heritage through the social networks that will serve to start promoting the Corpus of next year.

https://www.facebook.com/concelloponteareas/

Flowers Carpets Festival

Bueu

The Corpus Christi celebration in Bueu is also linked to the image of the beautiful carpets made with flowers by groups of neighbors and entire families. Three years after its declaration as a Festival of Cultural Interest, the pandemic has also forced all parties involved to find ways to reinvent themselves and keep the celebration alive. The main option that has been raised is the creation of a single carpet on the outside of the parish church.

https://www.facebook.com/Asociación-Cultural-Alfombras-de-Bueu-659429704166632/

Corpus Christi Flower Carpets

Ares

A little over a month ago, the Carpet Association of Ares and the City Council of Ares reported with “great regret” the suppression this year of the activities planned for the weekend of June 13th and 14th because of the covid. They recalled that some of the main aspects of this celebration (of tourist interest since 2011) was the joint work, hand in hand, and for several weeks of the most veteran neighbors, and during the previous night of the smallest. This in current circumstances are impossible to carry out. Neighbors have quickly appealed to keep this traditional colorful by adorning the balconies of their homes with flowers this weekend.

https://www.facebook.com/alfombrasfloralesdeares/

Corpus Christi Festival

Redondela

The Festa da Coca in Redondela is another of the celebrations that have been postponed this year, and with it the traditional Corpus Christi rugs and the rest of the elements that made the celebration declared of tourist interest two decades ago. But the floral tapestries will be present again through the virtual contest promoted by the City Council. The intention is that the neighbors make rugs or miniature models from their homes, which will then be evaluated by a jury and exposed through the municipal social networks.

https://www.facebook.com/redondelaconcello/

Festa da Rosa

Mos

Also in Mos they have chosen to make the leap to the virtual world to not stop enjoying their Festa da Rosa (of tourist interest since 2014). This year the celebration will be transferred entirely to the Web and will include activities as diverse as workshops, musical performances, children’s shows and videos. There will also be the opening speech, which this year will be given by Ángel Pichel, Head of Emergencies at the Álvaro Cunqueiro Hospital, and a children’s video contest in which children will be able to present theirs rose bushes. More than half a thousand people will take an active part in the programmed activities.

https://www.facebook.com/concellodemos

Festa do Boi

Allariz

Neighbors participation is one of the most important elements of the Festa do Boi (medieval celebration that in 2006 was declared of tourist interest) and its organizers want this spirit to continue this year, despite the suspension of the celebration. That is why the Xan de Arzúa Association has called a façade decoration contest to encourage residents to decorate the streets of the town with medieval and artistic motifs and a troubadour contest in video format that will be broadcast through Internet.

It does not have the dimensions of the great liturgical precincts nor is it the nerve center of a village or the destination of a massive procession, but the small Capela dos Santos Reis is full of peculiarities. A place that you must visit if you approaches to the municipality of Pontevedra de Bueu, on the peninsula of O Morrazo.

The current construction was built over 60 years ago on the ruins of an old 17th-century hermitage linked to the nearby Pazo de Castrelo. Its location, on the side of one of the mountains that stand behind Bueu, and the views from there of the municipal capital and much of the Pontevedra estuary are already a good reason to visit the Chapel and its surroundings. But in addition, despite its youth, the chapel presents several historical and architectural elements that make it a very unique place.

Its design was commissioned by the Council in the middle of the last century to Urbano Lugrís, one of the most important Galician painters of the time and a prominent representative of the surrealist movement. The passion for the sea is very present in all the artist’s work and the Capela dos Santos Reis was no exception. Scallops, conch shells, anchors, whales and other marine motifs served to Lugrís to decorate the arch that presides over the access door to the enclosure and remind the visitor of the importance that this element has for the neighbors of the area. It was also a project that allowed him to develop to the maximum as a creator since he could to combine design, painting, sculpture, architecture and even the direction of the works.

The fact of being dedicated to the Three Wise Men (the Santos Reis that give it its name) makes this small temple an exceptional case not only in Galicia, but also in Spain and the rest of Europe, because there are hardly any temples erected to honor to Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar.

Part of the original legacy of Lugrís, such as the altarpiece paintings and even the sculptures of the three kings have been lost over the years, but the place retains almost intact its original charm and the trace of the work developed there by the artist still It can be seen in other areas of the municipality of Bueu. The original sketches of the sculptures decorated the plenary hall of the town hall of Bueu and some of these and other Lugrís documents are preserved today in the Massó Museum.

The members of the Santos Reis cultural association are currently responsible for the care of the chapel and its surroundings and organize an annual celebration, but the exterior of the chapel can be visited at any time and some of the routes designed by the Bueu Council to value its heritage, it is included in the layout, so there is no reason not to enjoy this small, but interesting place full of art and history.

Do you have plans for August 3rd, 4th and 5th? If you still have a free space in the agenda, let us recommend the SonRías Baixas, a festival that this year reaches its edition number XV and that has become a reference of the Galician summers. Thus, every year, and during the first weekend of August, the Pontevedra locality of Bueu hosts this festival in which landscapes of dreams, gastronomy and good music are mixed. For this, they have numerous Galician, national and international artists who, once again, will take their music to this corner of the Atlantic.

The line-up of this edition is composed of bands known as Estopa, The Soul Breakers or the Galician Ses, among many others, completing a list that reaches 15 participants and which mix styles as different as rock, ska, punk or folk. To the program of concerts they are united a series of activities that conform what from the organization call “SonRías Experience” and that include a gastronomic festival and an audiovisual festival.

The gastronomic point comes from the hand of the different musicians who, during the festival, change their instruments by the stoves in what is called “Casa SonRías“, cooking their favorite dishes to offer to the attending public. All this, mixed with the rhythm of more live music and in an unparalleled atmosphere.

This year, in addition, the audiovisual festival will make a selection of musical short-films in a program designed specifically for the SonRías Baixas and which can be enjoyed throughout the afternoon of Saturday 5th, last day.

It is also worth mentioning the camping area with which they count and that is situated in a place of unequaled beauty, next to the main beach of the town.

The sum of all this makes this festival an unforgettable experience for anyone who comes to discover it. In fact, in the last edition and despite having been paused for two years, more than 16500 people approached Bueu, which made it the most successful and multitudinous edition so far.
