On 12 August, Galicia experienced one of those moments. The solar eclipse put the sky centre stage, and thousands of people gathered to watch the Moon pass in front of the Sun in an extraordinary spectacle.

But the eclipse is now over. And perhaps that is precisely a good reason to keep looking up at the sky.

Because Galicia has much more to offer those who are curious about astronomy. Nine Galician destinations hold the Starlight Tourist Destination certification, a recognition that highlights their excellent conditions for stargazing and their commitment to protecting the night sky.

Astrotourism invites us to travel in a different way: to slow down, move away from the lights of the cities and allow our eyes to gradually adjust to the darkness.

In Galicia, this experience can be enjoyed by the sea, on Atlantic islands, among mountains, in the landscapes of the Ribeira Sacra or in rural areas where the night still preserves one of its greatest treasures: a dark sky filled with stars.

Starlight Tourist Destinations in Galicia

The Starlight Foundation, linked to the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands, certifies places that stand out for the quality of their skies and their commitment to protecting them from light pollution. These are places where stargazing forms part of the natural, landscape, cultural or scientific heritage and also becomes a tourist attraction.

Galicia has nine Starlight Tourist Destinations: nine exceptional places from which to discover and enjoy our night sky.

1. Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park

There is something special about looking at the stars from an island. In the Atlantic Islands, the ocean surrounds the landscape, while the distance from major urban centres provides privileged conditions for observing the night sky.

Cíes, Ons, Sálvora and Cortegada offer an experience in which sea, nature and the night sky come together under the same stars.

2. A Costa da Morte

In A Costa da Morte, the sky is part of a landscape that is spectacular in its own right.

Here, the experience can begin by contemplating the Atlantic from a lighthouse or cliff and end beneath a star-filled sky. The contrast between the immensity of the ocean and that of the firmament turns night-time into a new way of exploring this territory.

3. Trevinca

In the mountains of Ourense, Pena Trevinca rises to 2,127 metres and offers exceptional conditions for astronomical observation.

Its altitude, low light pollution and expansive landscapes make this area one of the great references for astrotourism in Galicia. A place where simply looking up allows you to discover constellations, planets and the Milky Way in all their splendour.

4. Muras

In the Serra do Xistral, Muras invites visitors to enjoy a different kind of night.

The low level of light pollution turns its landscapes into a privileged setting for observing the stars and discovering astronomy. A perfect choice for those looking to combine nature, tranquillity and contemplation of the night sky.

5. Lalín

Lalín’s connection with astronomy also has a name: Ramón María Aller, one of the great figures in Galician astronomy.

The area allows visitors to discover this connection with science while enjoying a sky particularly well suited to observation. From its natural spaces, Galicia can be seen from a different perspective: as a territory that is also part of the universe around us.

6. Reserva de Biosfera Mariñas Coruñesas

The Mariñas Coruñesas Biosphere Reserve incorporates the night sky into an experience centred on nature and the landscape.

Here, stargazing can be part of a journey that also includes scenery, gastronomy, heritage and ecotourism. Because protecting the night sky also means preserving an essential part of our natural heritage.

7. Biosphere Reserve of Os Ancares Lucenses y Montes de Navia, Cervantes y Becerreá

Mountains, valleys and small settlements define the landscape of the Ancares Lucenses, an area where the darkness of night allows visitors to enjoy a particularly captivating firmament.

The destination offers an opportunity to discover the mountains of Lugo after sunset and understand that nature also has a nocturnal dimension.

8. Chantada

In the heart of the Ribeira Sacra, Monte Faro provides a magnificent vantage point for observing the sky.

Here, stargazing is combined with a landscape shaped by the Miño and Sil river canyons, vineyards, monasteries and viewpoints. An experience that shows how completely a destination can change when night falls.

9. Fornelos de Montes and Oia – South-west Galicia

South-western Galicia also offers privileged places from which to gaze at the night sky. The territory linking Fornelos de Montes and Oia combines mountain and coastal landscapes with low levels of light pollution, creating a particularly attractive setting for astrotourism.

It is another way to discover southern Galicia, following the path of the stars across a territory that stretches from the inland mountains to the Atlantic.

The eclipse reminded us of something we perhaps forget far too often: all we need to do is look up to discover an extraordinary spectacle above our heads.

But there is no need to wait for a major astronomical event. Every clear night is a new opportunity to contemplate the stars, identify constellations, follow the Moon’s journey or simply enjoy the darkness.

Today, many of these archaeological sites can be visited thanks to extensive conservation and restoration work, allowing visitors to discover what life was like more than two thousand years ago. Here’s a route through five of Galicia’s must-visit Ancient Fortifications.

Castro de Santa Trega 

Located in A Guarda, this iconic archaeological site offers one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Galicia. From its summit, you can admire the fishing port of A Guarda, the mouth of the Miño River, the vast Atlantic Ocean, and the Portuguese coastline—a breathtaking scene that has earned it the nickname of the finest hillfort viewpoint spanning two countries.

As you stroll through its ancient streets and explore its circular stone dwellings, it’s easy to imagine what life was like for the people who lived here over two thousand years ago. The location was carefully chosen: from this strategic vantage point, inhabitants controlled access by sea and the mouth of the Miño while enjoying an ideal defensive position.

To complete your visit, wander through the historic center of A Guarda and stop at one of its restaurants to enjoy fresh fish and seafood with the Atlantic Ocean as your backdrop.

Castro de Baroña

Located in the parish of Baroña, in the municipality of Porto do Son, Baroña Hillfort is one of Galicia’s most important Iron Age archaeological sites.

Built on a dramatic rocky peninsula and inhabited between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, it offers a truly unique setting. As you walk along its ancient defensive walls and settlement remains, the sound of the waves and the stunning sea views make it easy to travel back more than two thousand years.

Its location was no coincidence. The narrow isthmus connecting the peninsula to the mainland made the settlement easy to defend, while a robust fortification system—parts of which are still visible today—protected its inhabitants.

Round off your visit by exploring the coastline of Porto do Son, relaxing on its beaches, and enjoying the area’s outstanding seafood cuisine.

Castro de Viladonga

Located in the municipality of Castro de Rei, in the heart of the Terra Chá region (Lugo), Viladonga Hillfort is one of the best-preserved and most complete archaeological sites in Galicia.

Occupied between the 2nd century BC and the 5th century AD, this settlement offers a unique opportunity to discover how Castrexa culture evolved from the Iron Age into the Roman period.

Its exceptional state of preservation, together with the Museum of Viladonga Hillfort, which displays numerous artifacts uncovered during archaeological excavations, makes this an ideal place to learn about the daily lives of its ancient inhabitants and gain a deeper understanding of Galicia’s Castrexa heritage.

To complete your day, explore the landscapes of Terra Chá, a region of wide-open plains, wetlands, and natural spaces that offers the perfect combination of heritage, nature, and tranquility.

Castro de San Cibrao de Las 

Located between the municipalities of San Amaro and Punxín, in the province of Ourense, San Cibrao de Las Hillfort—also known as Lansbrica—is one of the largest and most impressive Castrexa settlements in northwestern Spain.

Built atop a broad hill between the Miño and Barbantiño rivers, its nearly ten hectares offer privileged views over the surrounding countryside.

Walking through its streets feels like exploring a genuine fortified town. Its imposing defensive walls, monumental gateways, and well-defined neighborhoods allow visitors to imagine daily life in this important settlement more than two thousand years ago.

The experience is enhanced by a visit to the Castrexa Culture Archaeological Park, where a modern interpretation center explains the site’s history and the customs of the people who once lived there.

Castro de Troña

Located in the parish of Pías, within the municipality of Ponteareas, Troña Hillfort is one of Galicia’s most significant and thoroughly researched archaeological sites. Built on Mount Doce Nome de Xesús, this ancient settlement overlooks the Tea River valley from a strategic position that explains why it was chosen by its inhabitants over two thousand years ago.

The site features a complete defensive system of walls, ditches, and embankments, together with the remains of dwellings, cisterns, and ancient water channels. The visit is enriched by spectacular views across the valley and by remarkable features such as the famous Serpe de Troña, a petroglyph surrounded by legends that adds an air of mystery to the experience.

Complete your visit with a stroll through Ponteareas, where you can discover the heritage, gastronomy, and landscapes of the O Condado region.

More Than Castrexa Culture

Visiting a hillfort is about much more than exploring an archaeological site. It’s an opportunity to discover some of Galicia’s most authentic landscapes, admire the territory from the same vantage points as its ancient inhabitants, and connect with a history that remains deeply embedded in Galician identity.

Many of these sites are located near beaches, protected natural areas, hiking trails, and charming towns, making them the perfect destination for a memorable getaway.

These are areas recognized by UNESCO within the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) programme, created to demonstrate that it is possible to conserve nature while living in and enjoying the territory in a sustainable way.

In Galicia there are seven Biosphere Reserves which, together, cover nearly a quarter of the region’s territory.

1. Terras do Miño

 Very close to Lugo, a landscape awaits where water defines everything. The Miño River, wetlands, and riverside forests create a perfect environment for walking, enjoying gentle routes, and disconnecting surrounded by nature.

1. Área de Allariz 

 A place where nature and environmental care go hand in hand. Walking through Allariz means discovering a peaceful landscape, with the Arnoia River as the main feature and a historic centre that is a model of restoration and sustainability.

1. Os Ancares Lucenses e Montes de Cervantes, Navia e Becerreá  

If you enjoy mountain landscapes, this is your place. Here you will find traditional villages, native forests, and surprising biodiversity in every season of the year.

1. O Río Eo, Oscos e Terras do Burón

 A green and serene territory where the Eo River shapes valleys and transitional landscapes between Galicia and Asturias. Ideal for those seeking calm, nature, and unhurried tourism.

A once-in-a-lifetime experience

The eclipse will take place in the late afternoon, with the Sun very low on the western horizon. This makes Galicia a privileged destination, as many of its beaches, viewpoints, and cliffs offer clear views over the ocean—the ideal setting to observe it.

In some locations, the phenomenon will last until just before sunset, creating a magical atmosphere in which the light will change, the temperature will drop, and the landscape will be completely transformed.

Best places to enjoy the eclipse

To make the most of the eclipse, there is one key factor: choosing the right location.

A Coruña
A province with a clear presence of totality. The city of A Coruña lies within the path of totality, as do many municipalities in the metropolitan area and across the north and inland regions. In the southwest and in some coastal areas, the eclipse will be partial.

Lugo
This is the Galician province with the greatest coverage of the path of totality. Most of the territory, including the capital, will be able to experience the total eclipse.

Ourense
A province of contrasts: a predominance of a partial eclipse with totality in some municipalities. This is especially concentrated in the east and southeast (Valdeorras and mountainous areas), while in the city of Ourense and much of the rest of the territory, the eclipse will be partial.

Pontevedra
A partial eclipse predominates, with totality only in specific inland municipalities. In most of the province, the magnitude will be very high, although it will not reach totality.

• Fragas do Eume

If you love getting lost in impressive forests, this place is a gem. Fragas do Eume, in A Coruña, is one of the best-preserved Atlantic riparian forests in Europe, with more than 9,000 hectares of almost untouched nature following the course of the Eume River.

The best way to explore it is on foot, walking trails where sunlight barely penetrates the thick vegetation. Oaks, alders, ash trees, and more than 20 species of ferns coexist with lichens and moss, creating that intense green atmosphere that only spring brings.

A classic plan is to visit the Monastery of San Xoán de Caaveiro, an ancient monastery with over 10 centuries of history hidden in the heart of the forest. The views from there over the treetops are spectacular.

The park isn’t just about plants: it also hosts a wide variety of wildlife, and if you pay attention, you might spot birds like the dipper or traces of mammals living in the forest.

• Corrubedo and Carregal & Vixán Lagoons

If you’re looking for a different plan by the sea, this coastal park in A Coruña is ideal. Its main star is the huge dune, over a kilometer long, 250 m wide, and reaching 20 m high in front of the ocean—a true “queen of sand” moving with the wind.

The park combines dunes, beaches, and lagoons in a unique landscape. Corrubedo Beach coexists with two main lagoons:

• Vixán, a freshwater lagoon surrounded by reeds, home to many water birds.
• Carregal, a brackish lagoon that connects to the sea, creating a vibrant ecosystem where tides, birds, and marine life mix.

You can explore the dunes via marked trails and boardwalks, enjoying the park without harming its delicate ecosystem. And if you love birdwatching, bring binoculars: Corrubedo hosts thousands of water birds, especially active in spring.

• O Invernadeiro

If you’re looking for an almost wild destination in the heart of nature, the O Invernadeiro Natural Park, in Ourense, is unforgettable. This space, with 6,000 hectares of mountains and valleys, sits in the heart of the Ourense Central Massif, a territory of gentle slopes, rugged rocks, and forests that seem endless.

There are no urban settlements within its limits: only pure nature, free wildlife, and silence. It’s the perfect place to feel truly immersed in the Galician landscape.

In spring, the park comes alive with color and movement: streams and rivers flow strongly, holly, yew, and sorb trees look fresh and green, and birds of prey, like eagles and falcons, soar above the mountains.

You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy it. Access is managed with prior permission, and most trails are on foot, making the experience more authentic. Some routes lead to fascinating places like glacial cirques, waterfalls, or viewpoints, while others take you into the heart of the forest, where you can sense that special silence that only a well-preserved environment can offer.

• Serra da Enciña da Lastra

If you want to discover a corner of Galicia with its own personality, Serra da Enciña da Lastra is worth a visit. This natural park in Ourense lies in the Sil River valleys, and its limestone peaks are a rarity in Galicia, where granite dominates.

Nature here has a special touch: oak and chestnut forests, thyme-scented meadows, and more than 25 orchid species, giving it an almost Mediterranean feel.

One of the park’s hallmarks are the “palas”, caves and rock cavities filled with stalactites and stalagmites, home to bat colonies. The Sil River winds through spectacular gorges, and traditional villages dot the landscape. Some trails, both on foot and by car on rural roads, let you discover viewpoints and hidden corners.

• Baixa Limia‑Serra do Xurés

If you’re looking for an escape where nature, history, and landscapes mix, Baixa Limia‑Serra do Xurés in Ourense is a place that leaves unforgettable impressions. Located in southwest Galicia, nature here doesn’t respect borders: crossing the Xurés mountains takes you into the neighboring Peneda-Gerês National Park in Portugal.

The park offers Atlantic forests, deep valleys, and rugged mountains, with colors and textures that change at every step. The Limia River forms waterfalls, reservoirs, and small cascades ideal for enjoying the surroundings.

History also thrives here: the Roman Vía Nova crosses the territory, and traditional villages retain their charm. In spring, oaks and strawberry trees look green, wildflowers fill the meadows, and you might see eagles, wolves, or Garrano horses roaming freely. Highlights include the A Fecha waterfall and the Corga da Fecha natural pool.

You can explore it on foot, by bike, or on horseback, and several routes by car connect viewpoints, villages, and points of interest. The park also preserves cultural heritage like mills, granaries, and stone enclosures.

• Monte Aloia

If you want a quick getaway into nature without going far, Monte Aloia is perfect. Near Tui (Pontevedra), it was the first natural park declared in Galicia. Though small, it offers a varied and beautiful landscape to explore in spring.

It’s part of the Serra do Galiñeiro and rises as a lookout with spectacular views over the Miño River and its valleys, ideal to feel on top of the Galician landscape.

There are marked trails totaling about 10 km, including footpaths, viewpoints, and recreational areas, perfect for strolling when the hill is full of color with gorse, rockrose, or heather. There are also historic remains, like old mills, adding a special touch. To start, the “Centro de Visitantes” Forest House provides information on trails and local nature.

Today, nearly 8,000 different varieties of camellia are preserved across historic manors and gardens. To discover some of the places where this flower reaches its full splendor, we offer three four-day themed routes that combine nature, heritage, wine tourism, and gastronomy.

CAMELLIA ROUTES

Camellias Sleeping in… Paradores

A route to discover historic gardens while staying in Paradores de Turismo, monumental buildings transformed into unique hotels.

• Day 1 – Santiago de Compostela

The journey begins in Santiago de Compostela, a UNESCO World Heritage City and the endpoint of the Camino de Santiago.

Spend the afternoon exploring the historic center and visiting the Santiago Cathedral, home to the famous Pórtico da Gloria.

For lodging, the ideal place is the Hostal dos Reis Católicos, located in Praza do Obradoiro. This former pilgrims’ hospital is one of Spain’s most iconic Paradores.
In the evening, enjoy the lively culinary scene in the old town and have tapas on popular streets such as Rúa do Franco or A Raíña.

• Day 2 – Santiago, Vedra, and A Estrada

Start the day with a walk along the Alameda de Santiago, one of the city’s most emblematic parks and a magnificent viewpoint of the cathedral.

The route continues to three of Galicia’s most spectacular manors:

• • Pazo de San Lourenzo de Trasouto, surrounded by historic gardens and an impressive century-old boxwood hedge.
  • Pazo de Santa Cruz de Ribadulla (Vedra), famous for its camellia-lined walks and the monumental Carreira das Oliveiras.
  • Pazo de Oca (A Estrada), known as the “Galician Versailles” for the beauty of its gardens and ponds.
    After the visits, you can return to Santiago and enjoy the nightlife.

• Day 3 – Vilagarcía de Arousa, Meis, and Cambados

The route heads to O Salnés in the Rías Baixas. First stop is Pazo de Rubiáns, in Vilagarcía de Arousa, where gardens, forest, and vineyards house an outstanding collection of camellias.

Take the opportunity to taste local cuisine with products from the estuary such as mussels, scallops, or oysters, paired with Albariño wine.

In the afternoon, visit Finca A Saleta in Meis, an English-style garden with numerous exotic species and camellias.
The day ends in Cambados, where you can stay at the Parador de Cambados (Pazo de Bazán).

• Day 4 – Cambados

The final day is dedicated to visiting Pazo de Fefiñáns, one of Cambados’ most emblematic historic sites.

Here you can tour the cellars, walk through Albariño vineyards, and stroll through gardens with native species. A perfect way to conclude the route by exploring the connection between historic gardens and wine-making tradition.

Camellias Sleeping in… Manors

This route invites you to discover some of Galicia’s most beautiful manors, staying in grand buildings surrounded by gardens and nature.

• Day 1 – Padrón

The route begins in Padrón, a historic town linked to the Jacobean tradition and Galician literature.

Visit the Botanical-Artistic Garden of Padrón, declared a Historic Garden, with numerous plant species among walks and ponds.

Nearby is Pazo de Lestrove, the former residence of Santiago archbishops, now a hotel.
For dinner, don’t miss trying the famous Padrón peppers.

• Day 2 – Santiago, Vedra, and A Estrada

After breakfast, head to Santiago de Compostela to stroll through the Alameda before continuing to three essential manors on the Camellia Route: Pazo de San Lourenzo de Trasouto, Pazo de Santa Cruz de Ribadulla, and Pazo de Oca, the “Galician Versailles.”
All of them stand out for their historic gardens and camellia collections.

• Day 3 – Vilagarcía de Arousa, Cambados, and Meis

The route continues to O Salnés. First stop: Pazo de Rubiáns, surrounded by gardens and vineyards. Next, visit Cambados, the Albariño capital, to enjoy its seafood cuisine.
In the afternoon, visit Finca A Saleta, in Meis, one of Galicia’s most interesting private botanical gardens.

• Day 4 – Pontevedra and Soutomaior

The final day starts with a visit to Pazo de Lourizán, surrounded by an extensive estate with tree species from around the world.

The route ends at Soutomaior Castle, whose gardens were the first in Spain recognized as an International Camellia Excellence Garden.

Camellias and… Wineries

This route combines the beauty of camellia gardens with the discovery of Rías Baixas’ wineries and vineyards, the cradle of Albariño wine.

• Day 1 – Cambados

The journey begins in Cambados, a grand town known as the Albariño capital.
Highlights include the ruins of Santa Mariña de Dozo and Pazo de Fefiñáns, where you can visit the cellar and taste local wines.

• Day 2 – Vilagarcía de Arousa and Ribadumia

The route continues to Pazo de Rubiáns, with gardens and vineyards cultivating numerous camellia varieties. Then head to Carril, famous for its clams, before visiting Pazo Quinteiro da Cruz, in Ribadumia, which houses over a thousand camellia varieties.

• Day 3 – Meis

The day is devoted to Finca A Saleta, one of Galicia’s most outstanding botanical gardens, with camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas, and other exotic species.

• Day 4 – A Toxa, Combarro, Pontevedra, and Soutomaior

The final day begins on A Toxa Island, known for its chapel covered in shells. Next, visit Combarro, one of the most picturesque towns in the Rías Baixas, before continuing to Pontevedra. The route ends at Soutomaior Castle, surrounded by one of Galicia’s most important camellia gardens.

The experience starts at Santiago de Compostela station, the departure point for this tourist train that travels through some of Galicia’s most emblematic camellia gardens. From the start, the journey combines heritage, nature, and the unique landscapes of the Rías Baixas.

The first stop is Pazo de Rubianes, in Vilagarcía de Arousa, one of Galicia’s main camellia landmarks. Its internationally recognized botanical gardens showcase thousands of specimens and numerous varieties of this flower, brought from the East in the 19th century.

After the guided visit, the journey continues to Vilagarcía station, then to Arcade. Here you will have free time to eat and enjoy local cuisine, especially famous for the oysters from Vigo estuary.

In the afternoon, the itinerary continues to one of Galicia’s most impressive historic gardens: Soutomaior Castle. Besides touring the interior, you can stroll through the gardens, where century-old camellias coexist with exotic species in a landscape of great value.

Next, the route heads to another must-see location: Pazo Quinteiro da Cruz, in Pontevedra province. Its gardens host over a thousand camellia varieties and are part of the European Historic Gardens Itinerary, making it one of Galicia’s most notable botanical spaces.

After this last visit, the group returns to Vilagarcía de Arousa, where the experience concludes before taking the train back to Santiago de Compostela, completing a day dedicated entirely to discovering the beauty of camellias in Galicia’s historic gardens.

More than 15 kilometres of ski runs

The resort offers over 15 kilometres of skiable terrain, spread across 23 slopes of different difficulty levels. It also features 6 ski lifts, 5 kilometres of cross-country skiing and 4 kilometres of artificially snow-covered runs, thanks to its snowmaking system.

• For beginners

The Xeixo area is specially designed for first-timers. It is a safe and accessible space to learn the basics of skiing, with the added bonus of privileged panoramic views from the upper part of the resort.

Runs such as Manolo, Refugio, Fontefría and Regato offer attractive routes for intermediate levels. More advanced skiers can enjoy the red run Lusitania, with a spectacular descent through forests, or Pluviómetros I and II. The greatest challenge comes with the black run Entrenamentos, accessible from the Os Corzos drag lift.

In addition, the resort offers equipment rental, lockers and a ski school, making it easy for those without their own gear or for anyone wishing to learn with professional instructors.

• O Cebreiro

In the municipality of Pedrafita do Cebreiro, this place dazzles in any season of the year.

Its main treasure is the “pallozas,” circular stone houses with thatched roofs stacked in layers, a true symbol of traditional Galician architecture and declared a Cultural Heritage Site. Snow covers its streets and roofs, creating a magical landscape that seems taken from a fairy tale, ideal for photography and light snow walks.

• O Courel

In the southeast of Lugo province lies the Serra do Courel, an impressive mountain range mainly covering the municipality of Folgoso do Courel.

Snow dresses its hills and valleys in white, creating unique postcards. Besides its beauty, it stands out for its ecological richness and biodiversity, declared a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2019.

• Os Ancares

From Pico Miravalles on the border of León with Asturias to Pedrafita do Cebreiro, this impressive mountain range offers valleys, peaks, and forests covered in snow, enhancing their beauty.

Among its most emblematic spots is Piornedo, a mountain village where traditional Galician pallozas are preserved. Os Ancares also houses some of the highest peaks in Galicia, making it a must-visit for hiking, nature, and mountain landscapes lovers.

• A Fonsagrada

Located in the central-eastern part of Lugo province, it is the largest municipality in Galicia. Its town center rises over 950 meters above sea level, offering unique views of the impressive mountain complex that serves as a natural border between Galicia and Asturias.

One of its most curious spots is the parish of O Vilar de Cuíña, from where you can only reach Riodeporcos (Asturias) by crossing a hanging footbridge over the Navia River reservoir, combining adventure and spectacular snowy landscapes.

• Serra do Xistral

In northern Lugo, Mount O Xistral stands as a natural refuge of great scenic value. Its peaks and slopes, over 1,000 meters high, are covered in white, offering a winter spectacle of forests, valleys, and snow-covered meadows.

One of its most remarkable spots is the Fonfría area, from where trails cross dense forests and pasturelands, creating a unique nature and adventure experience.

• Viveiro and Serra de Meira

Located in northern Lugo, the town of Viveiro and nearby Serra de Meira combine coast and mountains, offering very special winter panoramas. The Meira mountains transform their forests and valleys into a fairytale-like winter scene.

Among the most striking spots is the A Rocha viewpoint, from where you can see extensive snowy landscapes descending to the surrounding valleys.

OURENSE

• Cabeza de Manzaneda

The only ski resort in Galicia, located in the Ourense Central Massif within the municipality of A Pobra de Trives. Its terrain is divided into two peaks: Cabeza Grande (1,781 m) and Cabeza Pequena (1,775 m). For winter sports enthusiasts, the resort offers various slopes suitable for all levels. • Baixa Limia – Serra do Xurés

One of Galicia’s most impressive natural parks. Protected since 1993 and recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it covers over 20,900 hectares. It spans the municipalities of Entrimo, Lobios, and Muíños, reaching the border with Portugal and connecting to Peneda-Gerês National Park.

The peaks of Xurés reach between 1,000 and 1,500 meters, offering snowy landscapes of great beauty and biodiversity. Every visit becomes a unique experience for ecotourism lovers.

• Pena Trevinca

Located on the border between Ourense and Zamora, Pena Trevinca rises as the highest peak of the Segundera range, part of the Galaico-Leonese massif. At 2,127 meters, it is the highest peak in Galicia and Zamora, offering spectacular views covered by a white blanket over mountains, valleys, and glacial lakes.

The ascent to Pena Trevinca is recommended for experienced hikers due to its difficulty. However, it can also be enjoyed from nearby towns such as A Veiga, where the snowy mountains create breathtaking winter landscapes.

Located in the Ourense Central Massif, Serra da Queixa rises as a natural enclave of great beauty, with snow-covered slopes and valleys transforming the landscape into a spectacular winter scene.

• Mountains of Allariz and A Limia

In southwestern Ourense, the mountains of Allariz and the Limia region offer snow blankets, covering meadows, forests, and villages with a very special charm. Although their altitudes are lower than other areas of Galicia, the winter landscape they offer is equally impressive.

A millenary fruit

The chestnut tree, known in Galician as castiñeiro, is one of the longest-living trees in Europe. In Galicia, many centenary specimens seem like guardians of time, such as the “Castiñeiro Centenario” in the small village of Ramil, Triacastela – Lugo.

Its presence has shaped the Galician rural and mountainous landscape for generations. Although it is believed that the Romans promoted its cultivation in Galicia, recent studies indicate that the chestnut spread across the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula more than 20,000 years ago.

Since then, its fruits have been essential for food, especially in times of scarcity. So much so that when the potato arrived from America, in Galicia it was called the “chestnut of the land”, reflecting the importance of the native fruit.

Magosto: From the countryside to tradition

For centuries, the chestnut has not only fed people and livestock but has also inspired proverbs, legends, and popular celebrations. One of the most emblematic events is the magosto, a festival where villagers gather to roast and share chestnuts, celebrating the richness of autumn and Galician culture.

Internationally recognised quality

Galician chestnuts are renowned for their organoleptic qualities: their taste, aroma, and colour are unmistakable. For this reason, it is the only chestnut in Spain recognised with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Castaña de Galicia, a label that guarantees cultivation and processing in Galicia under strict quality standards.

The main cultivation areas include:

• A Coruña: Terra de Melide, Arzúa, and Boimorto.
• Lugo: practically the entire province, except the municipalities of A Mariña.
• Ourense: the entire province.
• Pontevedra: the regions of Deza, Tabeiros-Terra de Montes, and municipalities such as Cotobade, A Lama, Campo Lameiro, and Cuntis.

The chestnut tree requires abundant and well-distributed rainfall, mild temperatures, and warm summers that encourage fruit ripening—conditions that Galicia meets ideally.
