Summer in Galicia is synonymous with beaches, nature, heritage… and also gastronomy. During July and August, some of the most anticipated food events of the year take place, where local produce, tradition, and a festive atmosphere are the main highlights.

From seafood to fish, and wines with Galician Designation of Origin, we bring you a tour of some of Galicia’s food festivals declared of Tourist Interest. Let’s go!

Festa da Lagosta e da Cociña Mariñeira na Guarda

July 3–7

Atlantic lobster is the star of this celebration, paying tribute to one of A Guarda’s most iconic products. Alongside seafood tastings and traditional maritime cuisine, the programme includes music, theatre, a craft fair, and guided tours along the Ruta das Cetáreas, which explores the history of traditional seafood preservation in the town.

Festa do Polbo de Mugardos

July 11

As part of the Festas do Carme, Mugardos dedicates a day to its most emblematic dish: octopus “á mugardesa,” prepared with a distinctive onion and pepper sauce. More than a thousand kilos of octopus are served each year along the promenade thanks to the work of hundreds of volunteers, in an atmosphere filled with music bands and traditional tunes.

Festa da Pescada do Pincho de Celeiro

July 18

Line-caught hake takes centre stage at this food festival in one of Galicia’s most important fishing ports. Visitors can enjoy it prepared in a variety of traditional recipes while also experiencing music and the traditional queimada ritual. The Pescada do Pincho de Celeiro was the first fresh seafood product to receive the Galicia Calidade seal.

Festa da Vieira de Cambados

July 16–19

Cambados hosts the only festival dedicated to scallops sold at the port of Tragove. Tastings, cooking demonstrations, cooking competitions, nautical activities, and maritime music make this one of the busiest summer events, set in a highly scenic area next to the Arousa estuary.

Festa do Viño Albariño de Cambados

July 28 – August 2

Considered one of Galicia’s great wine celebrations, it gathers thousands of visitors around the wineries of the Rías Baixas D.O.
Festa do Percebe de Aguiño

August 2–8

The Aguiño goose barnacle, harvested from some of the most exposed cliffs of the Galician coast, is the star of this festival highlighting the craftsmanship of local shellfish gatherers. Show cooking, maritime workshops, traditional music, and tastings offer visitors a closer look at one of the Atlantic’s most prized delicacies.

Festa do Mexillón e do Berberecho de Vilanova de Arousa

August 7–10

This festival celebrates two key products in the region’s canning history and local economy: mussels and cockles. Food tastings are combined with popular activities and strong community involvement, reflecting the deep link between maritime tradition and local identity.

Festa da Lamprea Seca de Arbo

August 8–10

During the festival, it can be tasted in various recipes paired with Rías Baixas wines, along with craft fairs, popular events, and visits to the Wine and Lamprey Interpretation Centre.

Festa do Polbo do Carballiño

Festa da Anguía e Mostra da Caña do País de Valga

August 23–31

This celebration combines Ulla River eel tastings with the tradition of artisanal spirits produced in Valga. Alongside different dishes and distillates, the programme includes a popular queimada, traditional demonstrations, concerts, and cultural activities for all ages.

Festa do Viño do Condado do Tea en Salvaterra de Miño

August 29–31

The Salvaterra Fortress hosts one of Galicia’s oldest wine festivals. Wines from the Condado do Tea sub-zone of the Rías Baixas D.O. are paired with local cuisine, concerts, and popular gastronomic nights. On Sunday, the appointment of confraternity members and the selection of the “Viños Deliciosos” of the year take place.

Each of these celebrations is an opportunity to discover the region through its products, learn about local traditions, and enjoy the festive spirit that defines the Galician summer.

The name refers to the “chapantes,” a nickname for the residents of Cuntis, and a nod to their reputation as great diners.

Botelo and Androlla

These typical sausages from the Ourense region are mainly made from pork and stuffed into casings. They are usually served with potatoes, chorizo, and cabbage or grelos.

In the case of botelo, the pig’s stomach is used as a casing, making it the largest sausage. It is also called butelo or bitelo. Its curing is very short, which makes it a perishable delicacy, appreciated because it reaches its peak flavor only for a few days.

Every year, this unique sausage is the star of the Festa do Botelo in O Barco de Valdeorras, declared a Fiesta of Tourist Interest of Galicia. While similar to its relative from León, the botelo from O Barco is not exactly the same; in León, a similar sausage is known as pigureiro.

Androlla, another local sausage, is made from large intestine stuffed with marinated pork ribs. It is smoked for about ten days and cured for a couple of months, reaching its peak flavor with the arrival of Carnival.

On Carnival Sunday, androlla takes center stage at the Entroido de Viana do Bolo, in the Festa da Androlla, also declared a Fiesta of Tourist Interest of Galicia.

Many people gather to taste it and enjoy the festive atmosphere, with the boteiros (emblematic characters) parading through the streets with the carnival troupe. Fun and tradition are guaranteed.

Cabrito

The cabrito is roasted in a wood-fired oven, following a tradition maintained for decades. It is one of the emblematic dishes of Vilariño de Conso, where high-mountain grazing is still a living activity, present only in a few Galician municipalities. This delicacy can be enjoyed during the Festa do Cabrito, one of the main events on Carnival Saturday in Vilariño de Conso.

The Sweet Side of Entroido

For those with a sweet tooth, Entroido is pure temptation. Some of the most popular desserts include:

Filloas

In Lestedo, the Festa da Filloa, a Fiesta of Tourist Interest of Galicia, is held. This dessert, related to French crêpes but much thinner, is served sweet with honey, chocolate, chestnuts, or quince, or savory with lacón, mushrooms, or caldo de cocido.

Amid music and parades, visitors can enjoy filloas á pedra, made on hot stones, and those made by a local machine capable of producing 1,500 per hour! Humor and tradition come together in O atranque dos Xenerais da Ulla, a playful “battle” between two generals who satirize current political and social events on horseback.

Orejas

Fried dough treats with a hint of anise and lemon or orange zest. Crispy and addictive, they are among the most emblematic sweets of Galician Carnival.

Flores

Made from dough similar to filloas, fried in a special mold to form a flower shape. Very popular in the province of Ourense.

Bica

A buttery cake with a sugar-topped crust, typical of Ourense, especially in towns like A Pobra de Trives, Laza, and Verín.

Rosquillas de Anís

Soft and fluffy, with a distinctive anise flavor, they are a classic Entroido treat enjoyed throughout Galicia.

And of course, a good shot of xastré or coffee liqueur is essential. In Galicia, abundance is a matter of courtesy!

In Galicia, rainy days are part of the region’s charm, especially at this time of year. Gray skies blend with the intense green of the forests, the sound of rain …

In Galicia, rainy days are part of the region’s charm, especially at this time of year.

Gray skies blend with the intense green of the forests, the sound of rain sliding down the streets and streams, the wind playing with the leaves, and giant waves crashing against the coast… As the Galician saying goes: “Se chove, que chova” (“If it rains, let it rain”).

And on these days, what can you do? There are countless ways to take shelter from the rain and enjoy Galicia’s culture, gastronomy, and nature from the indoors.

Here are some ideas to enjoy alone, as a couple, with friends, or with family.

Discover museums and cultural spaces

You can start by visiting museums and cultural spaces, such as the Museum of Fine Arts in A Coruña, the Provincial Museum of Lugo, the Archaeological Museum of Ourense, or the Museum of Pontevedra.

In Vigo, for example, the Museo do Mar de Galicia lets you explore maritime history, exhibitions on fishing, and an aquarium, all in a beautiful setting by the sea.

Ethnographic museums also offer an intimate look at traditional Galician life.

Tip: choose a museum in the morning and combine the visit with a coffee and a Galician pastry in the historic center.

Relax with a thermal spa plan

A rainy day is the perfect excuse to take care of yourself and relax. Galicia is one of Europe’s regions with the most thermal resources, with springs and spas in every province.

From the Burgas of Ourense, through the Guitiriz Thermal Baths in Lugo, to the Mondariz Spa in Pontevedra, there are options for every taste.

Enjoy a thermal circuit and then savor the local cuisine: the rain becomes an ally of relaxation.

Stroll through monasteries, pazos, and historic buildings

Another option is to visit the interiors of monasteries, pazos (manor houses), and historic buildings. Even when it rains, these spaces have a special charm: wet stone, silence, and echoing corridors create a unique atmosphere.

From the Monastery of Oseira in Ourense, the Pazo de Oca and Pazo de Rubiáns in Pontevedra, the Castle of San Antón in A Coruña, or the Roman Wall of Lugo, Galicia offers corners where history is enjoyed even under the rain.

Start the day with a good breakfast and complete it with a visit to a monastery or pazo.

Enjoy markets, gastronomy, and wine tourism

These moments, sheltered from the rain, taste even better. Discover local markets with fresh products, such as the Praza de Lugo market in A Coruña, the Lugo Municipal Market, the Ribeiro Wine Route in Ourense, or the O Grove Market in Pontevedra.

Then, stroll leisurely through the streets and enjoy the typical seasonal dishes, like a hot Galician caldo.

And to complete the experience, why not visit a winery and take part in a guided tasting? The rain outside will only make these moments feel warmer and more welcoming.

In Galicia, rain is not an obstacle, but an opportunity to discover its culture, gastronomy, and heritage from the inside. Grab your umbrella, find your favorite shelter, and let the sound of the rain accompany your perfect plan.

They say that Galicia in autumn smells of chestnuts, a fruit that is an essential part of our gastronomy and which, centuries later, continues to play a leading role in …

They say that Galicia in autumn smells of chestnuts, a fruit that is an essential part of our gastronomy and which, centuries later, continues to play a leading role in traditions, festivals, and tables during this season.

A millenary fruit

The chestnut tree, known in Galician as castiñeiro, is one of the longest-living trees in Europe. In Galicia, many centenary specimens seem like guardians of time, such as the “Castiñeiro Centenario” in the small village of Ramil, Triacastela – Lugo.

Its presence has shaped the Galician rural and mountainous landscape for generations. Although it is believed that the Romans promoted its cultivation in Galicia, recent studies indicate that the chestnut spread across the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula more than 20,000 years ago.

Since then, its fruits have been essential for food, especially in times of scarcity. So much so that when the potato arrived from America, in Galicia it was called the “chestnut of the land”, reflecting the importance of the native fruit.

Magosto: From the countryside to tradition

For centuries, the chestnut has not only fed people and livestock but has also inspired proverbs, legends, and popular celebrations. One of the most emblematic events is the magosto, a festival where villagers gather to roast and share chestnuts, celebrating the richness of autumn and Galician culture.

Internationally recognised quality

Galician chestnuts are renowned for their organoleptic qualities: their taste, aroma, and colour are unmistakable. For this reason, it is the only chestnut in Spain recognised with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Castaña de Galicia, a label that guarantees cultivation and processing in Galicia under strict quality standards.

The main cultivation areas include:

A Coruña: Terra de Melide, Arzúa, and Boimorto.

Lugo: practically the entire province, except the municipalities of A Mariña.

Ourense: the entire province.

Pontevedra: the regions of Deza, Tabeiros-Terra de Montes, and municipalities such as Cotobade, A Lama, Campo Lameiro, and Cuntis.

The chestnut tree requires abundant and well-distributed rainfall, mild temperatures, and warm summers that encourage fruit ripening—conditions that Galicia meets ideally.

From tradition to the table

Today, chestnuts are enjoyed roasted, boiled, in stews, or with milk, and are valued both in traditional cuisine and in modern gastronomy.

In November, festivals such as the “Festa da Castaña” in Folgoso do Courel or the “Festa do Magosto” in Ourense, both declared of tourist interest, allow visitors to enjoy chestnuts and other seasonal products.

If you haven’t yet tried PGI Castaña de Galicia, this is the perfect opportunity to visit Galicia and discover its taste, aroma, and tradition.

On 1 July, the City of Culture in Santiago de Compostela will become the gastronomic epicentre of Galicia with the celebration of the 9th edition of the Best Tapas Chef …

On 1 July, the City of Culture in Santiago de Compostela will become the gastronomic epicentre of Galicia with the celebration of the 9th edition of the Best Tapas Chef Gala ‘Sete Cidades Sete Sabores’. This event will bring together the winners of the main local tapas competitions in Ferrol, A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Pontevedra, Vigo, Ourense and Lugo. The aim is to choose the best tapa in Galicia and pay tribute to the talent and creativity of the chefs who best represent the country’s miniature cuisine.

Each city will be represented by a restaurant and its winning chef, who will defend their proposals in a showcooking format before the jury and the public.

Ferrol – Bacelo

From the provincial capital, the Bacelo restaurant, headed by Álex Martínez and Mar Lago, will arrive after its victory in the Ferrol competition. Bacelo is committed to contemporary cuisine with strong local roots, where product and technique go hand in hand. Ferrol, a city with a naval history, is also beginning to make a name for itself on the Galician gastronomic map.

A Coruña – AMA Italiana Contemporánea

Vincenzo Amaddeo, chef at AMA, will represent a unique fusion between Galicia and Italy. His elegant and creative cuisine has conquered A Coruña with a proposal that mixes flavours from southern Europe and attention to aesthetics.

Santiago de Compostela – O Sendeiro

Alejandro Ferreiro, from the Compostela restaurant O Sendeiro, will present a sophisticated tapa based on seasonal produce, which has already been a huge hit at Santiago(é)Tapas. His cuisine combines sensitivity and technique in a city where tradition and avant-garde coexist among centuries-old stones.

Pontevedra – El Cafetín de la Alameda

Rubén González, from the well-known Cafetín de la Alameda, will defend Pontevedra’s creativity with a colourful and flavourful tapa. Pontevedra, pedestrianised, friendly and booming, has positioned itself as one of the most dynamic cities in terms of gastronomic offerings.

Vigo – La Marciana

From the city of Vigo comes Daniel Bastos, from La Marciana, with a bold, seafood-based creation, winner of the O Petisquiño competition. La Marciana represents the new wave of chefs from Vigo who combine freshness, risk-taking and a love for the Atlantic.

Ourense – A Feira

Paco Gómez, alma mater of A Feira Pulpería S.A., will bring the essence of Ourense cuisine to the competition with a signature touch. The tapa, based on reinvented tradition, will be a statement of principles: flavour, memory and product. Ourense, famous for its octopus, will make its mark among more avant-garde offerings.

Lugo – Orixe do Campo

José Luís Pardo and Auriana Macías, from Orixe do Campo, will arrive from Lugo with a tapa that speaks of rurality, sustainability and local cuisine. This young restaurant has burst onto the scene, reflecting the culinary evolution of a city traditionally linked to meat and vegetable gardens.

This year’s Gala will be much more than a competition: it will be a showcase for the enormous potential of Galician cuisine in small format, the creativity of its chefs and the richness of its cities. Galicia will now also be served… in tapas.

The O Ribeiro Wine Route, located in the province of Ourense, Galicia, is one of Spain’s oldest designations of origin, recognised since 1932. This region combines wine-making tradition, natural landscapes and a rich cultural heritage, offering a unique wine tourism experience.

A journey through vineyards and rivers

O Ribeiro stretches across the valleys of the Miño, Avia, Arnoia and Barbantiño rivers, creating an ideal microclimate for growing native varieties such as Treixadura, Godello and Loureira. These white wines are known for their freshness and balance, while the reds, made from Sousón and Brancellao, offer an authentic expression of the Galician terroir.

The O Ribeiro Wine Route has 18 wineries, 7 restaurants and 18 accommodation options, including spas and museums, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in Galician wine culture and hospitality.

Historical and cultural heritage

Ribadavia, the capital of the region, is an ideal starting point for exploring the area. Its historic centre preserves traces of the medieval Jewish community, with the synagogue and the Jewish quarter as its main attractions. The Castle of the Counts of Ribadavia and the Ethnological Museum are also worth a visit.

In Pazos de Arenteiro, a village declared a historic-artistic site, you can admire stately homes and the Romanesque church of San Salvador. The medieval bridge over the Arenteiro River and the route leading to the Pozo dos Fumes offer a perfect combination of history and nature.

Another place of interest is the Monastery of San Clodio, a former Cistercian monastery that now operates as a hotel, allowing visitors to enjoy a stay in a historic setting surrounded by vineyards.
Nature and thermalism

The region of O Ribeiro is also known for its thermal waters. In A Arnoia, the spa offers therapeutic treatments in a privileged natural setting. In addition, the Castrelo de Miño Nautical Park allows visitors to enjoy water sports and boat trips on the reservoir, offering another perspective of the surrounding vineyards and landscapes.

Gastronomy and festivities

Local gastronomy is another pillar of the O Ribeiro experience. Dishes such as pulpo á feira (octopus), empanadas (pasties) and artisan cheeses pair perfectly with the region’s wines. The Feira do Viño do Ribeiro, held annually in Ribadavia, is an excellent opportunity to taste local wines and enjoy cultural and musical activities.

Accessibility and sustainability

From the Ourense Intermodal Station, O Ribeiro is easily accessible in approximately 25 minutes by car or bus. The region is committed to sustainable wine tourism, promoting respect for the environment and the appreciation of cultural and natural heritage.

In short, the O Ribeiro Wine Route offers a complete experience that combines oenology, history, nature and well-being. It is an ideal destination for those seeking to immerse themselves in the essence of Galicia and enjoy its many charms.
