Most visitors to Galicia visit Santiago de Compostela and its famous cathedral. The 2nd most visited site in Santiago, after the cathedral is the fresh food market (or “el Mercado de Abastos”) located 200 meters behind the cathedral.
The fresh food market has been open since 1873, offering a wide variety of locally grown vegetables, meat, fish and seafood. Up to 4000 people might stop by the market on any given day.
In 2010 Rick Stein from the BBC visited the market and recorded a segment for his TV program.
As seen on the video above, there are also new businesses (like the restaurant Abastos 2.0) popping up in and around this market, making it a great culinary destination.
