With the beginning of autumn we welcome again the brown and golden landscapes, the fallen leaves, the first rains and the fields full of mushrooms. That is why, every year, by this time, the mountains are filled with fans of mycology. And if there is a place in which you find quality mushrooms is in Galicia, due to its climate, which favours its outbreak.
Although they can be found throughout the year, it is in autumn when the amount is larger and more varied. At this time, in Galicia, there are more than 4,000 different species, and among the best sites to collect them are the Ribeira Sacra, the Ancares, the Courel, the Sierra del Suido and the pine forests of the Rías Baixas.
The most valued species are usually in specific places with very specific temperature and humidity conditions, but the truth is that there are hundreds of species that can be easily found if we take a walk in the forest. But you have to pay attention to dangerous species. That is why it is advisable to inform yourself beforehand about these other mushrooms and, if we are not sure when we have them in front, it is better to let them be and pick only those that we are sure are edible. There are also mycological associations throughout the community that make routes and advise anyone who wishes about the different types of fungus, giving information about which mushrooms should not be collected.
Such is the importance that this product has in our community that, in many cities and towns, there are parties and events in its honour. This is the case of the Outono Micolóxico of Vilagarcía de Arousa (between 6th and 15th November) or the Xornadas Micolóxicas of Parada de Sil, Mos, Bueu, Cee or Monforte de Lemos; without forgetting also the Festa da Castaña e do Cogomelo of Riós (November 5th and 6th). In all of them, besides being able to attend conferences and workshops with expert mycologists, you can taste mushrooms for all tastes.
So you know, if you want to introduce yourself a little more in this world, you have it really easy in Galicia. Do you dare to start?
